EPL team of the year Empty EPL team of the year

Post by Aristoskank Fri Dec 18, 2009 3:52 pm

    From Yahoo Eurosport

    How it works

We take marks out of 10 awarded to Premier League players from a selection of six national newspapers - The Sun, Daily Star, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Times and The Guardian - then create an average. The top player in each position is rewarded with a spot in our team of the year for 2009.

    The team

Goalkeeper: Shay Given (Manchester City) - 6.87

Right back: Glen Johnson (Liverpool) - 6.70

Centre back: Brede Hangeland (Fulham) - 6.60

Centre back: John Terry (Chelsea) - 6.70

Left back: Ashley Cole (Chelsea) - 6.51

Right midfield: Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) - 6.83

Centre midfield: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) - 7.03

Centre midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) - 6.98

Left midfield: Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal) - 7.05

Centre forward: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - 7.15

Centre forward: Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - 7.05

    ------------------------------

That midfield would get teabagged by almost any team with a clue.

Thse 'team of the year' things aren't ever actually supposed to function as a formation though.

It looks about right to be honest. Not too sure about Given being there though. I'd take Friedel over him any day of the week.

I think it's absurd that Arshavin is as highly rated by British newspapers as Torres, and only just below Rooney. It seems like actually doing things in matches is only marginally better than looking pretty while doing nothing.

Benayoun along with Reina I feel has been our best players in this calander year.
Gerrard has been below par so far this season.

Keeper should be Reina or Friedel.

Oh no, Reina is fine, i think we should squeeze as many Liverpool players in there as possible. So far we have the "keeper-Sweeper/playmaker-goalie" Pepe Reina and Benayoun. Who else? Glen "Cafu" Johnson and that midfielder that plays like Gattuso but is Argentinian so must be good? GET THE FUCK OUT ADE!

    Stop whinging for once lol!

I'd have definetely Yossi in the team over Gerrard based on this year. Johnson, not many will argue againist being in the team. You might though. Reina, has been consistently suberb for us since he has joined us. So I see nothing wrong with mentioning him.

WTF you on about Mascherano? I've been saying this since the start of last season he has been average except for the big games.

This entire calander year, Yossi, Johnson, Torres and Reina have been excellent.

I'm too lazy to find that video of him throwing the ball to Andy Johnson for the Everton goal.

But he has been good. Brad Friedel has been better though.

He does tend to throw a wobbler in the derby at Goodison Park I've noticed over the years Laughing

Like I said, Reina or Friedel. Don't realy care who's picked out of the 2 here. Both have been far better than Given in my view anyway likewise Sorensen.

@ Kimmy, I think Johnson has put in some good displays defensively. Yes, he had made a couple of mistakes. But he has shown improvement IMHO. Arsenal 2nd half I will say was no doubt his worst performance, but he's coming back from injury just like many have over the last week or 2 and shown rustiness eg: Torres missing that sitter, again the weekend.

Why would you be trying to find places for Liverpool players, as the other Liverpool supporters are?

Could it possibly be because you consider yourself a Liverpool supporter? Hence the dossier, no?

Luis had mentioned the names of of several Liverpool players - my point being that I couldn't find a place for more than one.

If someone had suggested lots of Everton players I would have disagreed and said that I couldn't find a place for them in the team.

I think you missed the point.

Johnson is being picked also for his key role in Pompey's survival not just based on his Liverpool form.

Was there a better RB in the country this year?

Reina, Friedel, Sorensen and Schwarzer(sp?), the latter who I totally forgotton, were the best keepers around and all IMO were better then Given this season. I never demanded or made out Reina was the undisputed #1.

Yossi >>> Gerrard, based on 2009 and he should be in the team instead of Gerrard who's has been below par this season.

Torres is Torres. His goals per mins ratio I'd imagine is very good, I know his chance - goal ratio is despite his niggly injuries he has been plagued all year.

Being a Manc, go mention some Mancs if helps you.

Has Luis posted on this thread?

With your suggestion the team would contain four Liverpool players - four times as many as Man U (currently doing way better than Liverpool, and way better than you predicted they would) and twice as many as Chelsea, who just are a lot better than Liverpool in every way.

I think you missed the point.
