Saviola at least had one good season for you (01-02). How can you possibly leave out THE Maximiliano Gastón López? Surely there has been nobody more sh!t than him. Think about it.
Also, I'm sure it was difficult to leave out the likes of Caceres, Alfonso, Petit, Litmanen, Dos Santos (aka the 'new' Messi), Quaresma, Dani Garcia, Coco, Trashorras, Gudjohnsen, Albertini, etc.
Ahhh....the good old days.
Ahhh, so many choices to pick from for Barça!!! Especially in the first half of the decade. Here's my team...can't believe both you and Jaime forgot Gabri
Dutruel
Oleguer-Christanval-Coco
Gerard-Rochemback-Gabri-Geovanni
Alfonso-Maxi-Ezquerro
(Dis)honourable mentions:
- Saviola: despite our personal hatred, it would probably be harsh to put him in such a team, esp. with so many other candidates available...he did score goals after all.
- Albertini: hardly played and was only signed for half a season.
- Bonano, Jorquera, Arnau, Rustu: lots of choices at goalkeeper but I have the worst memories of Dutruel so he won.
- Trashorras, Dani Garcia, Nano, Oscar Lopez, Sergio Santamaria, Giovani: all youth team products that flopped...but I leave them out since they never played much with the first team and didn't cost any money. But compare it to the current crop of La Masia products and it illustrates the cyclical nature of youth academies' success. Although I guess it balances out with some decent youth players we did produce but didn't get a chance like Fernando Navarro, Pepe Reina, Mikel Arteta, etc.
- Caceres: was poor but wouldn't put him in a worst of the decade...he does have some redeeming qualities.
- Mario: I remember we got this guy from Valladolid on loan or something...but he never played. Not sure if that was because he was shit in training or just that nobody cared about him being there.
- Andersson: crap when he played, but mostly injured.
- Petit: was poor considering the price we paid, but he was only around for a year and at least we got reasonable money from Chelsea I think. Rochemback and Geovanni were both ridiculously expensive too and stuck around for longer.
- Reiziger: he hung around for too long IMO, well into this decade (surprised to see that when I checked on Wiki). But he did win titles as a starter in Van Gaal's first era so I'll cut him some slack.
- Quaresma: yeah he was poor but it was mostly down to problems with Rijkaard. And we basically got most of the money back for him anyway.
