Cameroon omit defender Sebastien Bassong from squad

Cameroon's French coach Paul Le Guen has named a strong squad for January's Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.

However there is no place in the squad for Tottenham Hotspur defender Sebastien Bassong.

The tournament's record goal scorer Samuel Eto'o from Italy's Inter Milan will be looking to add to his 16 strikes at his sixth Nations Cup.

The Indomitable Lions begin their Group D games against Gabon on 13 January before facing Zambia and Tunisia.

Rigobert Song will enter the record books in Angola as he will playing at his eighth Nations Cup.

The squad will train in the Kenyan capital Nairobi from 5 January before heading to Angola on 11 January.

There are two first time call-ups for defender Joel Matip of German club Schalke 04, and Goalkeeper Ndy Assembe of French club Valencienne.

Seven of the squad will be making their Africa Cup of Nations debut.

Cameroon, who have qualified for their sixth World Cup, are looking for their fourth continental title and hoping to go one step further than two years ago when they lost 1-0 to Egypt in the final in Ghana.

    Cameroon Squad:

Carlos Kameni (Espanyol, Spain), Hamidou Souleymanou (Kayserispor, Turkey), Guy N'Dy Assembe (Valenciennes, France), Rigobert Song (Trabzonspor, Turkey), Geremi (Newcastle United, England), Henri Bedimo (Chateauroux, France), Andre Bikey (Burnley, England), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Tottenham Hotspur, England) Aurelien Chedjou (Lille, France), Nicolas Nkoulou (AS Monaco, France), Alex Song (Arsenal, England), Jean Makoun (Lyon, France), Stephane Mbia (Marseille, France), Georges Mandjeck (Kaiserslautern, Germany), Joel Matip (Shalke 04, Germany), Enoh Eyong (Ajax Amsterdam, Holland), Landry Nguemo (Celtic, Scotland), Achille Emana (Real Betis, Spain), Somen A Tchoyi cheers (Red Bull Salzburg, Austria), Paul Alo'o Efloulou (AS Nancy, France), Achille Webo (Mallorca, Spain), Mohamadou Idrissou (SC Freiburg, Germany), Samuel Eto'o (Inter Milan, Italy)

Romaric has been left out of Ivory Coast's team. I'm not particularly surprised though - he's been absolute shite for Sevilla. Imagine a midfield playmaker with the mobility of a centre-back.

Can't wait for this cup to begin. drunken

Hope the that the qualified nations will use this cup to get their team set up for the World Cup. This cup should have been more of an advantage for the african teams as they come better prepared for the World Cup.

So who is going to win it?

Egypt is still a very good team and they showed some of that in this years Con Fed Cup. Can they win it 3 times in a row though?

Ghana should have beaten Cameroon last year in the semis but they choked. Haven't seen their team since allthough they did quite well in qualifiers.

Don't know how good Cameroon really are. In this decade they looked the best in 2003 at the Con Fed Cup, reaching the final. Lost touch with their team since but they have some good midfielders and with Eto+Emana they have some powerful forwards. Like most of the top african teams(except Egypt) they lack creative midfielders. Allthough if Germany can barge their way through a tournie without creativity then surely Cameroon can too.

Nigeria is even more of a mystery. They have a talented pack in the 16-23 category but that is more likely to take over at the next Nations Cup.

Ivory Coast seems to once again be the favourite for the third time going. So far they haven't lived up to their talent. This time around they have a very strong central midfield of Zokora(In great form) and Yaya Toure. They should go for a 4-3-3 Kalou-Drogba-Keita in attack. Saw Gervais at the olympics last year and he looked a real talent so maybe he can feature instead of Kalou.

No because Carrick doesn't spend half a century turning around with the ball. Think of him as combination of Huddlestone's agility, Lucas' passing range, and a decent shot. Monchi got this one wrong big time.

Interesting that nobody thinks Angola will do anything. They've got point to prove a new coach who is a legend in African football and home advantage. May not win it but foolish to ignore them. Also expect some World Cup bound countries not to prioritise ACN. They'll try to win, but it won't be priority that it is in non World Cup year.

Starts on the right or the left of midfield and comes inside to great effect.

6ft 3/190cm - the shoulders of a linebacker with the legs of a ballerina.

Big, quick and powerful yet deft and creative.

He can play defence-splitting passes, he can take people on and beat them and he can finish.

Absolutely amazing player - 27 in March, its incredible that it has taken him this long to be on the verge of a move to a big league.
