    Smurf with boundless belief
    By Simon Kuper

At breakfast with the Dutch national team, Wesley Sneijder called out to Piet Velthuizen, goalkeeper of a small Dutch club: “Hey, Piet, how much do you earn?” Velthuizen proudly replied: “€400,000.” “Don’t you think it’s funny,” asked Sneijder, Inter Milan’s playmaker, “that I make 20 times as much as you?”

After the exchange was publicly leaked, Sneijder protested that he and Velthuizen had been joking. That may be true – footballers’ humour is no laughing matter – and yet the conversation was classic Sneijder. The little man, whose Inter host Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday, has an unusually large dollop of confidence per square inch. Just when globalisation was supposed to have eroded national styles in football, here is the Dutch footballer of eternal stereotype. Dutch fans saw Sneijder coming when he was even smaller than he is now. Even in Ajax Amsterdam’s celebrated kids’ teams, he stood out for being perfectly two-footed. He lifted free-kicks onto the head of another boy, Nigel de Jong, now of Manchester City, using either foot. Aged 18 he debuted in Ajax’s first team. Three months later he was playing for Holland.

Nobody ever doubted Sneijder’s talent, least of all Sneijder. Aged 19, he was so outraged to start a match as a substitute that when he was sent on and scored, he turned and raised his middle finger at his coach. In the time before multimillion-euro salaries and daily media briefings, Dutch footballers had habitually been insubordinate. Everyone else had since turned corporate, but Sneijder remained himself.

Some initially questioned whether a slow 5’7” midfielder could go far. One Dutch team-mate unlovingly calls Sneijder “The Smurf”, while he is also known as “the keychain” and, nationwide, as “Sneijdertje”, meaning “Little Sneijder”. However, early in his career football’s fashions changed. As the fields filled with galloping supermen, only smurfs slight enough to twist could find the remaining inches of space. Little Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Franck Ribéry thrived. Small was beautiful.

When Real Madrid bought Sneijder, he accepted it as his due. Sneijder expects the world, and usually gets it. The actress Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen is voted sexiest Dutchwoman so reliably that one year she withdrew from contention to give others a chance. Sneijder texted Yolanthe. She became his girlfriend. Soon afterwards, on an aeroplane, he grabbed a microphone and proposed. Thankfully they have not yet accepted offers to star in a reality TV show, but the point is that Sneijder is confident.

Last summer Real bought a new side. Initially Sneijder survived, and was proud of his spot in the changing-room, beside Cristiano Ronaldo and one seat away from Kaká. Sneijder knew Real wouldn’t sell him. He advised his buddy Rafael van der Vaart to leave Real and go somewhere where he was wanted. Then, to Sneijder’s surprise, Real sold him but let Van der Vaart stay. “The people who now run Real Madrid are not fine people,” Sneijder lamented. Then he found true happiness again. Much as Sneijder had wooed Yolanthe, Inter’s coach José Mourinho sent Sneijder daily texts expressing his love. It worked. Sneijder joined Inter, and says of his confident little coach: “I am a bit like him. He could have been my father.” He loves the way Mourinho sits in the back of the plane among the players, and instructs Sneijder not to bother defending. Mourinho’s love is rewarded: Inter have lost four games this season, all when Sneijder wasn’t playing.

Holland’s coaches are less enamoured. Too often before, Dutch football’s traditional “conflict model” has torn apart the national team.

Already the Dutch have exiled Clarence Seedorf for fear that if his ego were added to everyone else’s, the changing room might spontaneously combust. Sneijder has courted banishment, too. But he’s good. This year, he hopes to win the Champions League and World Cup. In fact, he probably expects to.

He behaves like a moron on the pitch when things don't go his way, and apart from the occasional free-kick he has no obvious ability with a ball and certainly no footballing brain,

He's a very arrogant player and a very average one, so unjustified arrogance really. There are far better, skillful and more worthy Dutch players than Sneijder.

He didn't really come across as arrogant in Madrid in the beginning at least, but he spent a large part of his second season partying it up if you are to believe the rumors. I was annoyed when the club sold him since I thought VdV was going to be sold as well. But the way things turned out, it ended up being for the best.

It's interesting that Sneijder and VdV have followed similar paths. They were both hyped to be major superstars, and they were called to take on the torch from the likes of Berkamp and Kluivert. With Sneijder the major hype started after the 6-0 spanking of Scotland if I remember correctly.

Yet, neither of them lived up to the hype though both are having some success with their teams at the moment. Not sure how far they will go.

Pirlo, take off your rossoneri tinted glasses for a sec. Sneijder has been awesome for Inter this season. Its not just about freekicks, but also his passing ability has been very useful for us. There is a reason why Inter have not lost a game which Sneijder started....

That said, he is definately no CR or Dinho. And he has a huge ego, very arrogant. I can imagine him becoming a disruptive influence if he becomes a bench player at Inter.

Hopefully he learnt his lesson when the ref sent him off for clapping, and Mou gave him the cold treatment afterwards.

I respectfully disagree, i don't have tinted glasses on, he's not awesome, he's an average player who's only 'shining' at Inter because nobody else in your team can pass/is allowed to pass the ball or take free-kicks. The games in which he's been judged to be effective are no surprises, the games he's won by or saved with a free-kick. He's a got a good free-kick at goal to his game, little else.

His passing ability relies on the pitch and space being open, he's poor in close situations and isn't quick-thinking. Pandev is a much, much, much better player.

Sneijder is v good at free-kicks, shooting and finishing but nothing else.

I agree about Pandev vs Sneijder in terms of creativity and talent. However Sneijder can be a very good player if put in the right position. If Inter had a regista and played Pandev then Sneijder could focus on arriving in the box and finishing outside the area. Occasionally he can also deliver good passes and assists plus he is a hard worker.

He is indeed a bit arrogant and I remember correctly he made some comments that he shouldn't have been transfered(I disagree) and that he could have performed Alonso's role at Real Madrid. lol!

    Midget is a MASSIVE c**t!

He suffers from a small dog syndrome, those little dogs are always the biggest c**ts as well. Just because he is one of the few footballers at Inter does not make him world class, unlike what he thinks.

He only is usefull as playmaker and the reality is that Holland has three players who are all better then him at his position, RVP, Seedorf and VDV.

Even if Holland had the players to become world champion, they still wouldnt manage it, cause you have to stay 4 weeks in the same hotel as him Laugh

After three days I would start scoring own goals!

What annoyed me most about him, was his refusal to pass the ball to RVP at the previous WC. Should have been kicked out of the team for that.

why do you post? you're a moron, sneijder is without a doubt italian transfer of the year and maybe european transfer of the year, don't confuse his arrogance with his skills.

inter is much better now with him, acm is pretty shitty and won't even make it to 16 against a shitty manu. acmilan does not have a player like sneijder and you're jealous. your starting lineup is ambrossini gattuso etc etc garbage etc where is acm in the league? you get raped by the shittiest teams before dinho got back on form.
