    who's the richest?

I thought it was the one with the most money, e.g. man city or chelsea, or maybe real madrid if they have any property left to sell

You can laugh but really it just demonstrates what an accomplishment it is for there to even be two Spanish clubs in the last 16 of Europa League. The net spending of Villarreal, Valencia, Athletic, and Atletico COMBINED is less than 5m euro. I would guess that even Fulham has spent more than that.

Wouldn't bet too much on that, our resident Fulham fan can post their actual stats but Hodgson really doesn't spend much at all, and most of the players are either loan signings or players brought in on a free (Etuhu, Schawzer...etc.)

That is crazy. But Atletico tends to spend quite a bit each season so how can this be true? Are those clubs really that good at selling players? I mean Villarreal broke their transfer record when they bought Nilmar for 11M Euros. Who did they sell to make that up? Perhaps im not understanding this correctly.

    Yes, Khadrim supports Fulham.

Looking at net spending across one season can be misleading. If you were to do the same with Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool this season they must have made substantial net profits on their transfer spending, but that doesn't detract from the fact that the clubs have had substantial investment in players.

Equally, these 'rich lists' can only tell a small part of the story. There is no accounting for the costs that the clubs incur, or the distortion offered by a rich owner such as Abramovich, or the Arabs at Man City.

This summer Atletico hardly spent anything. Villarreal do well by scouting South American players for cheap and selling them high...for example they sold Caceres for 12m last year Rolling Eyes Also got some cash for Matias Fernandez.

    Edit: Jaime answered anyway.

True, though Caceres was from Recreativo and you paid closer to 17m for him. Biggrin

No, I'm pretty sure he was just on loan there for a season but Villarreal owned his rights...and it was just 10m or 11m up front, the rest was appearance fees that haven't been activated yet IIRC.

Even Cologne did spend more than 10m euro last summer.

But then again you pay much higher wages in Spain, especially because of the lower taxes for football players. And the wages budget is the decisive factor to get the best players anyway.

Still remember the 07/08 season where Sunderland spent more then the entire bottom 10 of Spain combined. That was a special season but stil funny that it could happen.

Thanks for the figures btw. I gues this means spanish teams are pretty cost effective at least relatively compard.

I think it's a bit difficult to compare different leagues' spending. There are so many differences, e.g. the going rate for within/between-league transfers (buying an average English player in England, for whatever reason, costs a lot more than buying an average Spanish player in Spain). Access to foreign imports is probaby key here - having the whole S.American market available makes a big difference.

Wages differ due to tax - I think I'm right in saying a Spanish/Italian club would have to pay less for a player to take home the same amount as would be the case in England/France due to lower taxes. Also the ownership models in general can differ quite significantly, as can TV/sponsorship payments & the average ticket prices.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that differences on a pure like-for-like basis as above may have significantly different consequences in reality. A club in EPL could generally not survive spending the levels given for some mid-level Spanish clubs listed above. So they may be 'richer' in these terms but in relative sense of what quality of players they can get with their money, very similar.

Yeah I know but just because you don't have a lot of money it doesn't mean you are going to spend it well.

    Debaser
That is a good point and I have never thought about that. Might it also have to do with having directors of sport. I remember reading an article on BBC that managers nowadays don't have the time to drive around England watching matches and scouting for players.
