By far the Benfica player which impressed me the most, he looked very comfortable on the ball and his decision making was excellent, and as you said I wouldn't be surprised if a top club came in for in over the next few years.

    Congrats on getting through. Ale

He was excellent in both legs albeit a bit cynical at times in the 1st leg Ale

Anyone know if Aguero will miss the first leg of our match? Heard he was booked for a silly foul a minute before the match ended.

Compared to other EPL teams their personnel aren't that great but Hodgson is a fucking genius!

He's got an extra 20% out of players that have looked average at other clubs. For instance, Duff looked past it at Newcastle but he's been fantastic this season at Fulham. Likewise, Zoltan Gera, who looked decent when he first moved to West Brom but steadily got worse. Since moving to Fulham, Hodgson has reinvented him. My favourite Fulham player though, is Mark Schwarzer.

That's just not true, the same weaknesses are still there. You say you watched last nights game, how many times did Duff recieve the ball in the final 3rd and then pass backwards? He still plays like a coward.

We play a possesion based game. None of our players go past players regularly. Its something of a shock when it happens. Duff is one the few who does try to do this. Usually going inside though. Having said that he made Evra look like a mug when we played Man U at home.

Duff was better when Paintsil was playing. Having a full-back who will goes to the byeline is better than someone who just stops at the 18 yard line

It took Zamora a long time to adjust to the Prem. He was shite at Spurs, and average at Wham.

He now plays to his strengths, which are using his good technique to hold up the ball and play in short passes if he hasn't got an opportunity to shoot. When he was at ours he played without a footballing brain, running down blind alley's, losing his cool when shooting, trying to be too clever on the ball

He's definitely a very decent player now, but it's hard to shake off the reputation from the first few barren years

I haven't followed Zamora's career, but based on the above it sounds like a clear case of Hodgson using him in the right way and playing to his strengths, rather than his own game suddenly improving, which is unlikely for players late in their career.

His own game has improved though Kas. At West Ham he didn't really use his strength particularly well but he's vastly improved his ability to hold up the ball + his decision making has improved massively.

Just returned from a long weekend in Brean. 4-1, some dodgy defending from Benfica (Julio Cesar Doh )

I knew that game on Monday would come back to hunt Benfica

Well done Liverpool. The best team on the night won

You may well now win the Europa League

I see that D Luiz had another so and so game. Still prefer him as a central defender

    Now, focus on the league.

It'll be interesting to see Liverpool and Fulham's physical level. If they are also poor in that aspect compared to their usual selves, then perhaps it tells us the longer journey does have an impact.

    How much longer was it?

Fulham rotated at the weekend. Liverpool played on Monday and used virtually their first team so it might be more telling in that tie.

Well, longer as in "longer than it would take by plane". In terms of hours, I'm not sure but it was something like 9 hrs from Barcelona to Cannes, where they spent the night...then another 8 or so hours to Milan. Around 1000 miles. Not sure what Liverpool's trip was, must be something similar. Fulham apparently got stuck in a 3 hour traffic jam on the Autobahn, so Hodgson got the players off the bus for a bit of training/warmup out by the side of the highway Laughing

There's no doubt a trip that long takes an effect. I hope Fulham don't suffer the same fate as Barca, especially at the hands of a bunch of hamburgers.

    That's brilliant Laughing

Liverpool's journey was just under 24 hours. Stayed in Paris too.

In regards to tonight, I expect something similar to the Benfica match. Struggle vs Madrid and hope to be still in the tie come the final whistle. With the 2nd leg hopefully beating them .

Apart from away to Perm we have scored in every European away game. So this seems likely.

90 minutes of defensive hoofball awaits. I can't cope with this much longer. This selection better not backfire.

That's the difference a season of unexplainable bullshit can do. It has pretty much wiped out every last shred of my faith in him

    Tonight he has picked

    .........................Reina

    Johnson.......Carra......Greek..........Agger

    ................Lucas........Masch
    ......Kuyt...................................Yossi
    .........................Gerrard
    ..........................Ngog

This is a midfield and attack that has been failing almost all season long. His only chance is that the defence looks strong and Atletico are unpredictable so we may sneak a few undeserved goals but our football will no doubt be unwatchable.

A right winger / playmaker at left midfield
A forward on the right wing
    A shite striker up front
    A failed central midfield combination

Every Liverpool fan will be filled with confidence before this one, but who knows, Rafa may actually get something right in this wretched season.

I know this isn't really the thread to ask, but do you think Rafa is leaving at the end of this season? There are strong rumours in the Italian papers that he is close to agreeing a deal with Juve, and atm Juve are trying to hire the backroom staff that he's requested.
