Tonight's big UEFA Champions League Semi-Final Empty Tonight's big UEFA Champions League Semi-Final

Post by Bashmachkin Wed Apr 28, 2010 1:15 pm

Breaking free from our stifling patriarchal society, I have this morning discovered new things. Looking past the confines of Barcelona vs. Inter Milan, I have learnt that another Champions League Semi-Final Second-Leg will take place this evening; for at 8:00pm Central European Summer Time, Umea IK will host Olympique Lyonnais for a place in the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League.

The score from the first leg stands at 3-2 in Lyon's favour. Has a football match been better poised? The mouth - it waters.

The two sides have some history. Lyon reached their first Women's Champions League semi-final a couple of seasons ago, at which point they were knocked out by Umea via the away-goals rule. Last season, both sides again reached the semi-finals of the competition, but both were defeated. So tonight, Lyon seek to reach their first final, while Umea will have to win the game if they are to reach their sixth since the competition began in 2001/02.

To reach this stage, in the last round, Umea overcame Montpellier via the away-goals rule. Will Lyon avenge their defeat of two years ago? Will they avenge their male counterparts after last night's semi-final defeat? Will they avenge their French brethren - or, should that be Schwestern - I am not entirely clear when it comes to German or to French - Montpellier? Whatever, it is clear that the ladies of Olympique Lyonnais have much to avenge.

Being at 8:00pm Central European Summer Time, this match has a fourty-five minute start over the Barcelona/Inter tie. I imagine the split will not quite be fifty-fifty whatever happens, but surely at least some of us here will be watching this match instead of the men's affair; and with fourty-five minutes in which to win devotees, this match may even earn a surprising number of followers, or of curious channel-changers should the other game fail to impress. I expect this thread to reach and cover at least three pages.

It was a channel that they introduced in the early 90s I think and it contained such classics as topless darts and very cheap soft porn movies. It was quality. When I was 13/14 years old I used to wait until my parents went out and watch it (before I had the internet at a reasonable speed of course)

Ah nope. Only ever had 4/5 tv channels in those days..The tacky early days of Channel 5 was my only source for soft porn on tv.

Will Live Tv be showing the Women's CL game or are you just being random?!

    Yo debaser bro!

What I'm hearing is both the BBC and ITV wanted the game, and would have paid good money for it too, but the ladies said no thanks FFS! They said they didn't want Lee Dixon nor Andy Townsend, nor 'take a bow daughter' Andy Gray, ogling their asses and talking crap about them at half-time and then after the game. How sassy FFS! Ladies! Mes Amis!

So the long and the short of it is that the game will be on neither the BBC nor ITV.

In fact, I'm struggling to find a TV channel that is showing the game. Eurosport is not, which is a sad indictment of that channel; and I can't even find a Swedish channel which is showing it. The game was scheduled for last week, but cancelled owing to volcanic activity, so maybe that explains why it is being overlooked.

MyP2P.eu suggests that a stream will be available come kick-off, from the Swedish broadcaster SVT (which is not listing the game on any of its channels, but nevertheless). I will update should the situation change.

Thanks Bash. If there truly is no TV coverage I shall have to hope Women's Hour on BBC Radio 4 happens to coincide with the two hour period (no pun intended) in which the match is played and happens to include live commentary by an established football expert such as The Horsey Woman Who Sometimes Covers Posh Sports On BBC or Terry Yorath's Daughter.

There truly is no TV coverage. I cannot even find a working stream! Oppression reigns. UEFA live scores tells me that the game is 0-0 at half-time.

Do tell me if you get your radio feed working.

Oh wow! What a thrilling game! It has been over for one hour and fifty minutes now, after taking place for one hour and thirty minutes not including the half-time break and stoppage time - but I'm still coming down from the height of the whole experience.

I didn't get to watch the game, nor did I get to listen to it on the radio (and I support debaser's motion here in its entirety - he should write a letter - and should the Conservatives win power in the forthcoming election, with our two votes we should be well on our way towards a referendum that will ultimately punish those responsible for depriving us), but I did follow it ardently via UEFA live score text updates.

The game finished 0-0. Not much happened. In the first half, one player thrust out her arm towards an opponent's face and it looked like she struck her - but it turned out that a comb was in said player's hand, and she was simply attempting to brush the auburn locks of her opposite number! At the end of proceedings, the players shook hands, embraced, lapped the pitch together in a display of mutual feminine honour; flowers spouted from the Gammliavallen's rafters and lay across the pitch; whilst the team managers sat side by side, cross-legged on the touchline, and reminisced over what they had seen, and revelled in what is still to come. It was like I felt deeply and vicariously the gentleness of the occasion, the beauty of two groups of people coming together and enjoying each other's company - in both victory and in defeat.

Olympique Lyonnais will meet Turbine Potsdam in the UEFA Woman's Champions League Final.

Yeah they were in the final last year in Berlin, just before the Werder-Bayer one. Got hammered by Duisburg though if I recall.

They've now split up the men's and women's finals in Berlin alas I think, and sad to admit I didn't make it to the stadium for that one last year as was too busy watching the FA Cup final and drinking Embarassed
