Goals-to-shots ratio for Chelsea midfield players this season (excluding pens)

    Deco 2 goals from 14 shots = 14.3%

    Essien 3 goals from 25 shots = 12%

    Lampard 11 goals from 94 shots = 11.7%

    Ballack 4 goals from 38 shots = 10.5%

    Very Happy

He is 4th best at chances created per 90 mins (a highly dubious thing to make stats on - Fabregas is 1st)

26th best passing accuracy (Mikel is 1st)

57th in most tackles won (Mascherano 1st)

Focussing specifically on the shots though - I was right and you were wrong <Ale>

In this era of the Centre Forward instead of a Striker, the goals have to come from midfield. As limited as Lampard is in some respects (passing), he puts the ball in the net which is the most important thing. He also won't disappear in midfield like Carrick when defending.

He doesn't play in midfield for Chelsea so you can't really make a comparison.

For England when he does play in midfield Carrick and Lampard are much of a muchness. Both are inadequate. Lampard doesn't defend at all. He just fouls and breaks ankles.

Granted Lampard is playing the top of a diamond he still needs to cover the middle of the park in front of the DM he scores goals and has proven to out last and out perform Gerrard making him our best attacking midfielder.

I know people have agendas but Lampard defensively marks space and stops people. I'm not calling him great at it but he is active.

I really don't get this thread. You're proving something most people recognise already - Lampard takes a lot of potshots with a low conversion rate. But you're "proving" it with useless statistics - there's no value in comparing a 2/14 rate to 11/94. This also ignores the issue of where the shots are being taken from. At the low end of that scale a single keeper fuckup or unmissable point-blank tap-in gets exaggerated importance.

Now if you were comparing him to players from other clubs playing in equivalent positions, that would be interesting, because we would be dealing in equivalent sample groups. Ideally you'd be compiling data from multiple seasons so that we could get a credible ballpark conversion rate for shot-happy attacking midfielders and see where he fit in there. Comparing his ratio to a mix of defensive players and substitutes is just not viable.

Of course, I'd expect that the right data would back up your point to a considerable degree. But all this set of stats is is newspaper filler.

Not sticking up for him playing for England. When he first started under Sven he was pretty good and played well for a time. He knows where the net is and can score.

I dont think you can really criticise a midfielder who consistently scores 20 goals a season. It used to be that a midfielder was a success if he got 10 goals, while Lampard has raised the bar now for others to match.

I think you underestimate ballack there, he will go wherever on the pitch the referee is and mark him out of the game. No-one in the world does that as well as him right now, I would say he is truly world class in that position.

26 goals (excluding internationals), including 9 penalties this season for Lampard, by my quick count.

It would more accurate to say 1/3 of his goals 'always penaltys'.

Don't forget he has some 12 assists in the premier league. So thats a good 30+ goals he has given the team.
