I think we did something similar to this some time ago, but I'd like you to try and rank, from best to worst, every world cup that you've witnessed in your lifetime.

Obviously the voting is likely to be swayed towards ones where your national team were successful but thought it might be interesting to see people's views.

    For me:
    1. 1990
    2. 1998
    3. 2006
    4. 1994

1998 had great players and some top games both in terms of quality and drama/entertainment. Argentina v Holland was the brilliant.

It was pretty shit in terms of stand out games, particularly in the knock out stages.

The saving grace was Ronaldo's comeback performances. Otherwise it would have been even further behind than 2006.

I was pretty young for 1998 so it has a kinda magical aura to it. Retrospectively, its fairly obvious that it was an awesome tournament. Shame that Dutch team didnt make the final.

2002 loses out for the timin of the games if anything. And the fact that German team managed to make it to the final.

You're being unfair about 2002. Best group stage ever. I couldn't stop laughing when Argentina and France were eliminated. Both were so arrogant before the competition. The sad thing about 2002 is that Brazil(once), Germany(once) and especially South Korea were helped by the refs.

The 2006 WC had very few good matches. Portugal vs Holland, Germany vs Italy (credit to Lippi) and that's it. There were too many goals from set pieces in the final stages.

    1986(N/A)-looks good especially a certain quarter-final Cool
1990(3)-only remember the semi-finals/final(ENG-GER I was allowed to watch the whole game but ARG-ITA was told to go to bed before Extra time.
1994(7)-watched a few group games Italy vs Ireland Brazil vs Cameroon I tried to watch Spain's first group game it was on silly time it was so late on a Friday night.I watched Holland vs Ireland Italy vs Nigeria Argentina vs Romania.

Cried for a week after hearing Escobar's death Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Then the Quarter-Finals I thought let me watch this tournament all the way through to the Final but I just couldn't

Only watched Germany vs Bulgaria and Holland vs Brazil(I remember one of the strangest goal scored ever and Bebeto celebration)

Brazil-Sweden was on a silly time but managed to watch Baggio vs Bulgaria.

Never watched the final until the shootout!

1998(11)-The best World cup ever IMHO.

    Favourite moments

Owen run and goal vs Argentina
Leonardo run vs Chile when Ronaldo smashed the crossbar
    Prosinecki goal vs Jamaica
    Ronaldo skill on Hendry
    Roberto Baggio Penalty vs Chile
    Argentine clever freekick
    Vieri destroying Cameroon
    Michael Laudrup's masterclass vs Nigeria
    Croatia taking Germany apart
Brazil vs Holland match(which should of been the Final)

    worst moments

    Ronaldo's health in the final
being told Owen was better than Ronaldo
    Beckham's sending off

2002(15)-one of the worse WC's in history(timezone, corruption, burn out of Figo,no Zidane)

    Best Moments

    3Rs
Return of the goal machine that is Ronaldo
Ronaldinho's two piece of magic vs England
Michael Ballack carrying Germany to the final(IMHO he was the best midfielder in Europe after Zidane at the time)
Edmilson overhead kick vs Costa Rica
Pele/Ronaldo embracing at the WC Final

2006(19)-Very good WC but not as good as 98.

    Best Moments

    Portugal finishing 4th
    Ronaldo breaking the goalscoring record
Zidane rolling back the years vs Spain/Brazil
Spain tricking everyone after their performance vs Ukraine

    Worst Moments

    No Ronaldinho
Nightmare in Nuremberg(When the dutch tried to butcher CR and decided to turn a football match into a streetfight)
Henry's dive in the semi-final vs Portugal
    De Rossi's elbow on McBride

From the WC I remember (1982 onwards, actually watched and understood what was going on 1986 and onwards), Germany has reached the WC final four times in my lifetime so far. Four out of seven - quite a limiting criteria you have there.

2002 was shit due to the lack of atmosphere (kudos to the Koreans though, they tried at least) and 'big games' between the traditional powerhouses, bar the final, of course.

Don't worry, I love the Germans. I'm about as un-nationalistic as one can get. Just it wasn't a particularly inspiring team. No bad feelings elsewhere, quite looking forward to see if your young attackers can play well in this WC too.
That I didnt like 2002 was more down to the lack of truly brilliant teams.

2002 aint remembered well cause those games were all very early for us. And the favs, France and Argentina got knocked out so early. But it had more goals per average compared to that failure 2006 for example.

I think im gonna swap them actually, quite liked it that Holland wasnt there. I supported our neighbours Belgium of course who played an awesome game against Russia 3-2! And they got shafted against Brazil!! Belgium scored a perfect goal but that was disallowed. And what about Papa Bouba Dioup, that name alone..and JDT of course. And Hiddink. And Ronaldo's ridiculous haircut!

And it was the WC where Italy had the best shirts of all time!

It was also the WC that England actually could have won imo.
