I can't remember a single game from 2002. I remember getting up every morning and watching them all, but I can't actually remember any of them.

Re: Your Favourite World Cups
i quite liked that one since i was completely neutral and it was so much different from what we usually saw...Axeslammer wrote:it was completely bland, we would say "without taste" in Holland.Romford Pele wrote:What was so bad about 2002?
1) 1998 was for me absolutely the best. Organisation, deserved winner, the football was good the weather... only the german and english hooligans were damaging the tourney...
2) 1990 although brazil had to win it since they had the best team but the dirty argentinians bribed the semis so germany could win it... new countries like cameroon started to impress the tourney. Some great football ( except for the oranje desaster)
I guess i'ld voted for 1986 if i'd watched that tourney better
3) 2002; the asian rise was superb with turkey and south korea. Positive football at some times... the final was crap however. No tam deserved to win it.
4) Footballing 1994 it was ok but the usa was too big too uninterested in the game. Organisation was also quite bad.
5) 2006 quite ok organisation, except the losses then, but footballing it was soooo negative. No team deserved to win it....
It says it all that germnay played the most attacking minded football. Terrible winner. The only thing that will be remembered from this tourney is the "head butt"

2002 must have been one of the worst W.C ever. The organization was great but there were so many cheating refery decisions. That's on of the main thing I remember.

Only been a football fan for 2002 and 2006 and I enjoyed 2002 a lot more, maybe because it was my first World Cup and I just loved that Brazil side. The fact that it was in Japan made it a bit special as well.

Depends what you mean by 'real'. Times have changed, comparing Messi to Maradona etc is stupid, completely different eras and it's a different game now. personally I'm glad I was born in this era as there's so much more football to watch, the pitches are better, the fitness of the players is better and the overall quality of matches are better from the highlights ive seen of yesteryear.

That's where you're mistaken.
Compare Barcelona to Real Madrid : Barcelona can be compared to old school (educating your own players, selective teambuilding), Real Madrid is modern football (buying everything that moves, flashes of individual class but no great team moves).

Football is the 90s just seemed so much more exciting. Fitness wasn't as good, but that was a good thing - the game was a lot more about technique and flair.
Also it was a much more level playing field in the EPL back then - sure, utd dominated but the spots below them were rotated a lot more.
And European and international football seemed a hell of a lot more exciting back then, but maybe that's my age.
In summary, 90s football>>>>>>>>>>>>00s football

Re: Your Favourite World Cups
74.
The first tournament I followed. Great atmosphere. Uncles taking time of work to watch the matches in our living room and me getting carried away by their excitement. Waterlogged pitch against Poland. Final against Holland. Helmut Schoen lived in the city I grew up in and the place was buzzing.
06.
Great matches, particular after the crappy preparation we had. The best for me was this kind of mental transformation that seemed to have taken place in Germany. 2002 I lived in California and slept through most of the tournament. The year before the Twin towers came down and America was transformed in an instant. American flags everywhere to show support. We were swept away by the communal feeling and I bought two flags to hang outside the house, one Irish for my wife and children and one German for me. When the package arrived and was opened it was the first time ever I held a German flag in my hands. In 06 it was fantastic to see people having fun waving flags, feeling pride in their nation and no one thought the worse for it.
82.
Memory of a Restaurant in a campsite in Spain. TV behind my back, Germany playing. Suddenly a roar, goal, cheering. I turn around expecting Germany to be 1 up. Of course, the other team had scored. Oh the naivety of youth.
86.
Great comeback fight in the final.

Re: Your Favourite World Cups
1. 1990
the only time I ever cried because of Brazil. even without Neto, Corinthians craque that should be there but was not, I was a 10-year old in flames because of it. I played futsal all day with my neighbours, and then we would go to someone's house to watch a game and then come back to our own football, pretending we were Careca, Maradona, Milla, Matthäus, etc.
I remember everybody saying Brazil had no chance, that team was shite, even my father. but I loved that team: Ricardo Rocha, Careca, Alemão, Dunga, Branco... Brazil beat Sweden, Costa Rica, Scotland, and then came Argentina. I'll never forget that goal. I felt the critics were being unfair, we played a hell of a game against Argentina, 3 shots hit the bar. Maybe that's why I like Dunga and defensive football so much. Dunga became a public enemy in Brazil, the symbol of that team, but for me he was excelent.
I liked Germany and hated Argentina then. I supported Germany since Brazil was kicked out, and much more against Argentina. Holland was a great deception to me. I remember I expected a lot from them.
2. 1994
Dunga's revenge. Brazil won that WC with 3 DMs: Dunga, Mauro Silva, Mazinho. The press had to lick their asses, but they still hate them, and are showing it now against Dunga.
That game against Holland is my favourite WC game, but the more difficult, even the players recognize, was the one against USA.
This time, Colombia was the deception.
3. 1986
I remember Pfaff, Platini, Zico losing the penalty, Josimar scoring against Poland, Lieneker, Maradona, Burruchaga, Brazil playing in white shorts against Spain (at least in my memory they are in white shorts, don't know if it's accurate though).
I was beginning to like football, and my first football memories, of Corinthians and Brazil, come from that year.
4. 1998
Good Brazil games, despite that horrible final. Against Denmark was my favourite.
I also supported Paraguay and Colombia, because of Corinthians players Gamarra and Rincon, and would support any of those 2 against Brazil should they play. There was no Corinthians in Brazil.
Remember watching Argentina - England at school, me being the only one supporting Argentina.
And I remember that I thought Brazil -Holland was the real final, and that France or Croatia would be a walk in the park for any of those 2.
2006
best game was certainly Holland - Portugal IMO, followed by Italy - Germany, then Argentina - Mexico.
2002
I didn't like to see France and Argentina and Portugal out so early. I hated that asian atmosphere, the worst ever.
Favourite game: Brazil - England. That Rivaldo goal is my favourite.

I can't remember enough games from 1978 to include it, but the final is definitely up there with 82 & 86
I remember 1978 WC as if it happened last week.
For me the best World Cups in my lifetime are:
1970
1986
1998
1982
1994
1978 would edge 1994 if it hadn't been for the death threats to the Peruvian delegation at halftime during the infamous Argentina-Perú match in the last 8 stage.

Re: Your Favourite World Cups
Memory is not completely clear, so some of the following may not have happened, or happened in different world cups than I remember:
1986: Maradonna goals against England (handball and run), Lineker scoring a few goals, it was hot and the stadiums were jumping
1990: Bad-tempered final, everyone loving Cameroon, and the pensioner Roger Milla dance-celebration, toto schilacci
1994: no-one in the US knowing world cup was on there, Baggio carrying Italy to the final and missing the last penalty
1998: Owen run and goal, Ronaldo carrying Brasil until the final then suffering some kind of mystery illness, Bergkamp goal against Argentina, Croatia raping all over Germany
2002: Brasil and Turkey providing some great football, rivaldo dive after being hit with the ball on the knee, dodgy refereeing favouring Korea, Totti being sent off and Vieri missing a sitter with his right foot (I was living in Italy at the time), Germany making the final despite not playing well, Klose scoring 3 headers against Saudi Arabia to anounce his arrival on the big stage.
2006: I was there for some of it in Munich, shit for getting tickets, good for fan-zones, although due to limited capacity people who went to the games couldn't later get in. Games pretty average all the way through, good team goal from Argentina, headbutt in the final. Italy defence being great (but some on here give the credit for that to Pirlo )
No-one can ever be completely happy with time-zones unless you are living in the one that it is happening, however I found the USA to be the worst as the matches were on in the morning either just before work or during work (I was in England at the time). Bosses tend to have some flexibility in the afternoon/evening matches, so I found 2002 was not too bad, we even watched some of the matches at work.
So I would say best to worst:

Biggest loser this WC= the 6 till 10 year olds that are watching it for the first time!
Now these little rascals think its always this good! FFS. Even if the knock-out stages end 0-0 and penalties etc. This belongs to the top.
