Kuyt has indeed been shit last 2 games. Before that he was very good in the games leading to the WC.

    And Benitez.

It's certainly become far too easy and common for teams nowadays to just sit back, stay organised, and defend for 90mins with little or no attacking ambition whatsoever, then claim "well what else do you expect us to do against a superior team".

So no team ever parked the bus before Mourinho and Benitez? This happens at every WC, the inferior teams play negative football.

Well catenaccio has existed for a long time, but I personally certainly can't remember such widespread "park the bus" tactics. Small teams would usually have a go at least.

What people forget though, that at the WC there are no more teams that are clear whipping boys; at least not in the traditional sense.
Even the 'minnows' now have tactical discipline or park the bus quite effectively. Its not like in the past you could play against Jamaica or Saudi Arabia and score 9 goals or something.

The minnows are still minnows, but the quality and/or tactical gap among the teams (not talent or individuals), is much smaller than it used to be in the past.

Whatever though, Netherlands have been insipid in the first half. I expect them to do something positive now.

You have to take into account many of the teams are "afraid" to lose the match. And hence not taking any risks and playing it safe.

Also because teams finances are becoming more and more insecure that results are more scrutinised than ever. It seems it is alot easier to take up the defensive approach and earn more points, rather than being expansive.

There are no small teams, or even dark horses who play an attacking team first. Everybody prefers a clean sheet nowadays over the chance of winning 2-1. Better have the sure 1 point, rather than the chance of 0 points by attacking.

All the small teams now that, and Mourinho and Benitez have had so much succes with that aproach that even some of the bigger teams aporach the game like that as well. Even Brasil is now a defense-based team.

I was just about to compliment Japan. They have been a much better team than I expected them to be over the last 2 games.
Not only did they get a horrible group in terms of team(styles) matchups against theirs, they have held their own as well. Their defense isn't that bad, and they have been tactically quite strong.
