The Professor wrote:shazlx wrote:I was unsure about Wilshire but what is remarkable about him is not his technical ability (above average in top end Latin countries) but his tactical understanding. His positioning and covering of Diaby and also Song (who has been all over the place so far this season, and not in a good way) has been surprisingly effective. Interceptions and tackling. He's been really good as a DM both the defensive side and also bringing the ball out of defense, exactly what England need. This is quite amazing considering how small he is, being English and only 18!. He's not as good as the 18 year old Fabregas offensively but defensively he is very capable.
I never thought Ramsey was particularly good defensively apart from his tackling which was mostly good.
Spot on on Wilshere
I think he's going to be the lynchpin of our midfield when Cesc leaves.
borocooper wrote:Wnat about Ramsay?
I haven't seen Ramsey control the match the way Wilshire has been doing recently. Ramsey was playing well as a box to box midfielder with little tactical responsibility and he was getting better at retaining possession and not always going for the most dangerous pass which he tended to do when he was first put in the team. If Arsenal continue to play 433 in future years, I see no reason why we would not play with a DM/DPL (Song/ Denilson), Box to box CM (Ramsey/ Diaby) and the main playmaker (Fabregas/ Wilshire). That would probably be the best way to organise the midfield. If we revert to a flat 442 then I'm sure Wilshire and Ramsey would be able to play as a partnership, Ramsey just needs to become more tactically astute in his defensive game. That would mean Wilshire mainly sitting back as the DM with Ramsey going box to box but in a fluid passing team, both would be expected to move up a down to where the game takes them whilst covering for each other. The Professor wrote:
I think is less of a conductor than Wilshere. My money is on Wilshere taking over Fabregas as our main man in midfield. I could be wrong though.
Both of them could potentially be a class midfield combo.

Re: The Next England Squad
Barton for England
http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/67933.html?CMP=OTC-RSS
"I think I am a better player now than when I signed," Barton told Sky Sports. "I don't think it is for me to say but at the end of the day I don't think there is anyone playing better than me in this country. That's an honest answer, not a big-header answer.
"There are probably six or seven midfielders get in a squad for an England game and I don't think there are two English players playing better than me at the minute.
Barton is seemingly frustrated by England boss Fabio Capello's selection policy. "But it's not all about football," he said.
"Fabio Capello came in and said he wanted to pick form players, but I don't think he has done that. Some of the players than have been picked have not been form players. If the selection policy is form players then there are not 21 better, or in-form players than me in the country."

Re: The Next England Squad
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1351203/Arsenals-Jack-Wilshere-wanted-Fabio-Capello-new-England-playmaker.html
After little more than seven minutes of friendly international football, Jack Wilshere would appear to have provided Fabio Capello with the answer he has long been looking for. How best to fill the void that has been created by the absence of Owen Hargreaves.
Gareth Barry deserves credit for offering the England manager one solution, but it has never been a perfect fit. The holding, quarter-back role that the injury-plagued Hargreaves occupied with distinction at the 2006 World Cup is not a natural position for Manchester City midfielder Barry.
In Wilshere, however, Capello now sees a problem solved. He envisages the future as the 19-year-old Arsenal player who is already being hailed as cultured and classy enough to slot in alongside Xavi and Andres Iniesta at Barcelona without looking out of place.
Even Capello has said as much, rating him better technically than Claude Makelele, and he intends to deploy Wilshere in front of the back four when England meet Denmark in a friendly in Copenhagen next month.
Encouraged by the fact that Arsene Wenger has included Wilshere in his starting line-up on 26 occasions this season - including 17 times in the Barclays Premier League and five in the Champions League - Capello believes the teenager is ready for the challenge.
'He played just 10 minutes at Wembley when we met Hungary in August,' said Capello as he enjoyed a spot of lunch with the media this week. 'But I have monitored him for five months and he's improved a lot. He's a really interesting player and I want to try to put him in this position in front of the back four.
'I have to decide because he's so young. He stays alone in midfield, and probably that can be dangerous. So we have to decide in two days we stay together.'
Wenger thinks Wilshere has more to offer. 'He's a box-to-box player; more than just a holding midfielder,' said the Arsenal manager, even if he did then concede that his talent enables him to play in 'any position across the midfield'.
So much to offer: Arsene Wenger says Wilshere can also be a box-to-box player
But Capello's needs are different to Wenger's and the England manager is excited by the way Wilshere has grown in stature this season.
'I think he's mature enough to play this role,' he said. 'When he started, sometimes he played without big confidence. He was timid, shy. Now, every game he improves a lot, he plays with confidence, without fear and he also tackles. He tries to win. He's very important.'
If there are concerns, they centre on one or two off-the-field problems and an aggressive tackling style. In October he received his first straight red card for a challenge on Birmingham's Nikola Zigic. Not that Capello seems too worried.
'The tackle is the tackle,' he said. 'I saw what happened but sometimes you can make mistakes. I did the same sometimes as a player. The red mist. I also read that he had some problem with a taxi driver. Silly things. But not a lot of problems. He's good in the private life, although young players have to understand that they are an example to young people.'
Goodbye: Wilshere's promotion probably means Barry will no longer find a place in the starting line-up
So how good can he be? Names like Makelele and Andrea Pirlo were put to Capello and his responses were interesting.
'Wilshere is better technically than Makelele,' he said. 'He's slower than Makelele. But when he receives the ball he is more dangerous than Makelele.
'Pirlo? No, no, no, no. Not like Pirlo. Wilshere's too young now. Probably he can be better but depending on which style your team plays.
'The style of AC Milan was to play long ball sometimes. The style of Arsenal is a lot of passes. He can do this but I never saw this thing with Wilshere. He wins back the ball, he passes, he turns, dribbles, goes and shoots. I saw everything. But the style of Arsenal is touch, touch, touch, touch - like Barcelona.
'Hargreaves played this position very, very well, every game. But after the knee problem, he was never back. I put different players in there, but they never played in this position.
'I saw Wilshere play every game in this position. Barry with Aston Villa never played this position. He started to play there only with me.
'Wilshere is young and playing all the time with Arsenal. If you play with Arsenal, you are a really good player because Wenger likes the good player.'
So how will he organise his side for Denmark? Steven Gerrard in front of Wilshere, with Theo Walcott and James Milner on the flanks and Wayne Rooney up front with a strike partner that would probably be Andy Carroll were the Newcastle striker not injured? That would seem the most likely line-up and it certainly spells the end for Barry as a first-team regular.
'If Wilshere is fit he will play,' said Capello. 'With Barry, I will decide. The players will arrive really tired because they play a lot of games before this game. But it will be important for Wilshere to understand that he will be the future.'
Since England last played in November, Capello has been considering other options, too. Sunderland forward Danny Welbeck, on loan from Manchester United, would have been a contender for the squad before being sidelined by injury, and the search for cover at right back has drawn Capello's attention to Tottenham's Kyle Walker, currently on loan at Aston Villa, and Liverpool's Martin Kelly.
Howdy, partner: Gerrard (left) should join Wilshere in midfield, playing just in front of the Arsenal starlet
'Welbeck is another interesting player,' said Capello. 'He and Carroll are two young players we monitored but both are now injured. They are really interesting. As is Jordan Henderson and Kieran Gibbs.
'Walker is very interesting, too. I saw him play for the Under 21s. He is very fast and technically very good. But he has to improve with his defending.
'Martin Kelly is still very young but an England player for the future.'

Re: The Next England Squad
So there must be a squad coming soon (friendly next week vs Denmark).
U21 squad includes likes of Henderson, Albrighton, Richards, Gibbs, Rodwell, Smalling, so I guess we're going to be getting something a bit less experimental than last one.
Any shouts for potential new call-ups? Think Baines is overdue a go (and with Gibbs in U21s and Warnock not playing for Villa, surely he will get in). Wonder if Capello will dare go with Barton. He should be in there ahead of, say, Lampard & Milner on form this season. Downing may get called back too, I think, as with Jinky injured there isn't much in way of natural lefties.

Re: The Next England Squad
Walker's a bit of a surprise. Have to say he strikes me as being very much in the Glen Johnson mould. Needs to improve defensively if he's going to be a top player, but he v.good with ball at his feet and bringing it up the pitch and certainly has pace/size needed for the position.
Also a little surprised Agbonlahor's kept his place as his form's been iffy. Though no more or less than Defoe/Crouch, I suppose.
Glad Downing's back (though he frustrates at times) and Baines deserves his shot. Aaron Lennon seems to have fallen well out of favour.

Listen chinny, as far as i'm concerned England are nothing. You think i'm going to support a team that will contain Andy Carroll for the coming years? I just find it funny that the best English midfielder this season is ostracized for incidents that happened years ago, while the likes of Gerrard and Wilshere are welcomed in with no fuss. Apparently there was a 40 man provisional squad and Barton didn't even make that, apparently Karl Henry did though.

I didn't, it was a rumour in the sun.

Boss Fabio Capello will name his 23-man squad tonight - and Wolves' controversial midfielder Karl Henry is in the provisional 40 who are under consideration.

Stunned I am.
Man Utd are playing City lunchtime Saturday so I'm sure there'll be some other tactical dropouts. Ferdinand's already out and it would hardly stun me if his hamstring problem miraculously clears up on Saturday morning.
Capello's already said he wants to try Bent alongside Rooney up front, so I'm guessing he will play something like:
Hart
Johnson-Jagielka-Terry-Cole
Walcott-Barry-Lampard-Milner/Young/Downing
Bent-Rooney

I think they should be made completely optional. Players play too many games anyway, these games are often meaningless and should be an opportunity for the manager to try new things, fringe players etc. Easier if the established players withdraw themselves.
