Sir Alex Ferguson is still hoping Manchester United can wear down Bayern Munich's resistance to selling Owen Hargreaves.

The England international has emerged as The Red Devils' leading midfield target before the close of the transfer window.

Bayern are determined to resist the overtures of the Premiership club, despite Hargreaves acknowledging a desire to move to Old Trafford.

Ferguson understands the German champions' stance, but hopes to persuade Bayern to part with the 25-year-old.

"There is nothing I can tell you," Ferguson told PremPlus after United had started the new season with a thumping 5-1 win over Fulham.

"We are trying hard, but they are very stubborn and resistant are Bayern Munich. I can understand that and we can only do our best.

"I think we want to build a strong squad of players and there are key elements to that and that is certainly the case with Owen."

If United fail to complete a deal for Hargreaves, Ferguson is optimistic his squad has the depth to cope with the challenges which lie ahead this season.

He added: "We have a terrific squad. You saw the centre of midfield today was excellent.

"Michael Carrick is coming back, hopefully, next week and it gives us more ammunition.

"I'm very satisfied with the squad as a whole. We have 20-odd players and that is hopefully enough."

Wayne Rooney scored twice in the romp over Fulham and Ferguson was left to lament the fact that the striker will miss the next three games through suspension.

"It was a great start to the season, but unfortunately we don't have him for the next three matches," continued Ferguson.

"We have to cope with that and we will do. It's disappointing, but that's why we've got a squad of players.

"We have got to handle these situations the best we can and we will do that."

Louis Saha, an Ian Pearce own goal and Cristiano Ronaldo also helped The Red Devils to an easy victory which pleased Ferguson.

He concluded: "I think it's probably our best start to a season, scoring five goals. I was very pleased with the performance and the work rate was good. You can't be any more pleased than that.

"The making and taking of goals was excellent throughout the match and we played with great confidence and belief."

So if we dont get Hargreaves we wont make another midfield signing.
It will make me very unhappy.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Manchester United have made no further progress in their attempt to lure Owen Hargreaves away from Bayern Munich.

Ferguson, whose side began the season in sensational fashion with a 5-1 hammering of sorry Fulham at Old Trafford, has made the England international his major transfer target before the window closes on August 31.

Hargreaves is known to be keen on completing the switch from the Bundesliga champions but Bayern are refusing publicly to contemplate the transfer, not even if United come up with £34million according to general manager Uli Hoeness.

One potential chink of light emerged for the Red Devils this afternoon when Hargreaves was not even named on the bench for Munich's encounter with Bochum.

However, as far as Ferguson is aware the German giants remain implacably opposed to Hargreaves' departure.

"Nothing really has changed," said Ferguson. "We are trying hard but Bayern are proving very stubborn and resistant, which I can understand.

"We can only do our best and that is what we will keep doing because we are trying to build a strong squad of players.

"Owen is a special type of player and he would be part of what we want to achieve."

    Scholes.

How did everyone rate him today?

There raving about him (Lou Macari and Paul Parker) on MUTV but I suppose we have to remember that Fulham were average.

Shows against the mid table clubs and lower he's still a class above though.

When he comes back against Arsenal will be a better test I suppose.

the thing is though Hargreaves is the perfect player ,the best you could get for that role outside Essien. He's English well practically and will have no problem adjusting, he knows half the players from the England squad anyway, he doesn't need international clearence, he doesn't need a work permit.

Scholes put in an average performance really he never dominated but then we went gun hoe on teh counter attack he sort of did just enough.

I was very impressed by the movement of the front three though and i feel this will be the way we will play with Rooney Saha and Ronaldo basically in a front three interchanging positions with Scholes Carrick and hopefully Hargreaves in a midfield there

Average?? I certainly don't think he was fantastic but much better than average.

He's pass out to Neville for the second goal was top draw and he kept things ticking over very well. Unlucky with that shot as well.

Wasnt overly impressed by scholes. i duno what it's all about. he was good, but a few times gave it away, some wreckless challenges also. let it go under his foot once, also caught ball watching twice. would say 7 or at a push 8 out of 10, but wouldnt rave about it.

Is that new LRD, or old LRD? Very Happy

Hoeness said in a TV interview that he talked twice with Hargreaves, and explained to him why he won't let him move to Manchester. Furthermore, he talked to David Gill a couple of times, and told him that he won't mind talking about the English weather or food with him, but not Hagreaves. Very Happy

Scholes did what Scholes does, intelligently linking up play. Given it was Fulham i'm not reading much into it since even O'shea looked fairly accomplished in midfield.

I am sure though that he will rinse and repeat against the bigger teams which O'shea won't.

    And Poiuy 1:

There are other good players out there to play in Owen's role, who I think are at his and Essien's level or will be such as Mascherano and Muntari.

I mean yes I would like Owen but put yourself in Bayern's shoes. You've lost Ballack and now another good midfielder of yours wants to leave and leaves you next to no time to find a replacement. Obviously you wouldn't sell. I give it an 15% chance that Owen will move.

And finally Bayern had an average game against Bochum without him, more incentive for them to not sell him.

You have the same problem with Mutari though Undinese are not going to let him go for any less then 12 million and he is not worth that particualy when if we can get Hargreaves who speaks perfect English already knows the players and will have no problem with adapting to the culture.

Muntari does speak English though and £12 million would be worth it imo.

Did anyone else see Villarreal say Senna is certain to stay now, so if we don't get the Hargreaves deal done, we need to get our ass in gear. I really think a quality ball winner could be the difference between 1st or fighting all the way with Chelsea or 3rd.

Again, I'm really not sure why you think that Muntari is that ball winner. His defensive prowess is comparable to Vieira, at best. His best feature is the fact he always keeps it simple and gives an option in midfield. He's got high energy and a good deadball delivery, but he isn't some kind of defensive monster. Christian Obodo is that.

Its not just the ball winning though. We need a bit of an all rounder to add to the midfield engine. Carrick can sit deep and pick up the ball from the defence and Muntari (or even Reo-Coker) could be the one getting around the pitch adding to the attack when were in possesion or closing people down and getting stuck in when we don't have possession.
