Villarreal won 1:0 against Everton at Goodison Park, with Rossi scoring a cracker from a free kick. They were much more defensive oriented than against Lazio, probably testing out tactic for the away game against Odense in CL qualifications. Zapata once again looked very impressive.
Today Tottenham play Bilbao at White Hart Lane, should be worth checking out, as well as Liverpool against Valencia.

Re: La Liga 2011/12 Season Thread
Misery for Spanish teams continue - Wigan just beat Villarreal 1:0, but to be fair it was mostly a back-up "yellow submarine" team. Two positives for Garrido - Senna looks physically good and Wakaso had a very promising game as a left back. Read a few weeks ago that he is being prepared for this role long term and who knows, maybe it will work. He is a very direct player for Villarreal tiki-taka standards, but probably team needs somebody like him.

Re: La Liga 2011/12 Season Thread
Downloaded and watched Tottenham against Bilbao:
1) It didn't take long for Bielsa to change the way Bilbao is playing. They are still high tempo, but less direct and at least against Tottenham they were more patient than I ever remember them with play build-up. I was making fun of Redknapp when he said that he expects Bilbao to play like Villarreal, but in 1st half difference in style wasn't that great.
2) Bielsa is well known for his tactical adjustments during the match and he likes to have a few CM/DM available in squad, as he thinks that they are the most versatile. He aften changed things with Chile NT and he is doing the same with Bilbao, most surprising thing was to see Javi Martinez playing as CB (along San Jose). Maybe he played there in the past, for me though it was a novelty. He did well IMO.

Wigan 1-0 Villarreal.
I think I've seen Javi Martinez drop back in as a centre back once before but it was in the case of an emergency (sending off or something, I don't remember). They must have quite a few players out because I noticed in the recap that Oscar De Marcos was starting at left back as well.

That's correct, he had a tough time against Lennon, but was good going forward (not surprisengly). He was replaced in halftime by Aurtenetxe who left a very good impression, defensively and offensively.Jaimito el Crack wrote:Wigan 1-0 Villarreal.

Re: La Liga 2011/12 Season Thread
So Pique's injured, Busquets is injured, Xavi is injured, Puyol is injured, Afellay (ok, just a benchie) is injured. Our central defense for the Super Cup will be Fontas + a pre-season-less Mascherano. Or maybe Abidal if Mascherano has to plug the holes in midfield.
We're so screwed. I'll be glad if we can avoid a thrashing at the Bernabeu and at least give ourselves a small chance to win the Super Cup in the 2nd leg at Camp Nou.
Fuck FIFA, fuck Del Bosque, fuck pre-season tours of America.

Re: La Liga 2011/12 Season Thread
Isn't this happening every season?
MADRID, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Spanish first and second division players will go on strike for the first two weekends of the 2011/2012 league season, the players' union (AFE) said on Thursday.
"We are unanimous and firm in our decision to call a strike," AFE president Luis Rubiales told a news conference. "The league will not start until a new agreement (between the league and the players) has been signed."
At the heart of the dispute is the union's demand for a larger emergency fund to help players not being paid by clubs who are in financial administration.
The La Liga and second division seasons are scheduled to start on the weekend of Aug. 20-21.
The AFE were supported by over 100 top flight footballers in a Madrid hotel where the event was held.
Spanish internationals Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol were among the players and there were union representatives from France, Germany and Italy among others to lend their support.
Rubiales said the players had been negotiating with the Spanish football league (LFP) over a series of protective measures for players that are commonplace in other leagues in Europe but which Spanish players do not have.
"It is lamentable. As it stands we are at the bottom of the pile in Europe," Rubiales said.
"We don't want more money we want the clubs to honour the contracts they sign with their players.
"We don't want palliative measures. We have put forward proposals which exist in Holland, Germany, France and England which are preventative.
"In these countries if a club shows it can't pay its players the club doesn't compete.
"We have asked that players who are owed more than three months (wages) can break their contracts. It seemed like we had an agreement but it was left out."
Rubiales said despite the lengthy negotiations, the LFP had imposed a new settlement at the beginning of August which the players rejected.
"Enough is enough," he added. "This does not mean we are refusing to negotiate any more. We will do (so) for the good of the players and football in general.

Re: La Liga 2011/12 Season Thread
It appears from reports coming out of the press in Mallorca that Mallorca and Villarreal have agreed to terms for the transfer of Jonathan De Guzmán to the Yellow Submarine. Despite feverish denials in the press by Mallorca's president, to the effect that De Guzmán can go anywhere but Villarreal, apparently "secret" negotiations have been ongoing between the clubs.
The reported terms so far are that Mallorca has agreed to accept between 6.6 and 7 million euros for De Guzmán. There is apparently still a need to figure out what percentage, if any, of the money Villarreal receives for any future sale of the midfielder. The rumors are that Mallorca are angling for 20 percent.

Predictions for tonight?
Puyol isn't playing, and the team fitness is terrible, so I'll go with a 2-1 win for Madrid.

For once I agree with Messiah and Kas on the pessimism. I am not too bothered about the supercup, but it is obvious to everybody that Madrid is in much better physical shape going in to this game. Like Pep said, "it is not an excuse" however it is a fact, but when we are in shape then we will still be a better side than Madrid

not really being Pessimistic, if this were the first game of the season, i would back the players to pull out a draw, but i think the real players will want this more than the barca players and it will show in the performance and the result

No Pique, no Xavi, no Busquets, no Pedro.
Messi, Alexis, and Thiago start. This is going to be interesting, to say the least.
Valdés
Alves, Mascherano, Abidal, Adriano
Keita, Thiago, Iniesta
Messi, Villa, Alexis
Madrid play the same lineup that started the 5-0 last year:
Casillas
Ramos, Pepe, Carvalho, Marcelo
Xabi, Khedira
Di María, Özil, Cristiano
Benzema

maybe higuain, but the rest wouldnt make madrid stronger
i am surprised that mourinho dont field 3 DM/cm in midfield
mabye he has learned some stuff, that at home you must show some spirit and try to score, normally i would say barca would win this (with this real madrid line up), but i dont know how good barca is in shape, and they play just with 1 of the 3 key midfielders
hopefully özil has improved, and he can show his class over the 90 min, not just for 45 min ^^

Surely Kaka being in the team would actually lead to a 5-0?
As for Sahin, he's the new Kaka, if you get what I mean

Added to how easily Thiago loses the ball when doing his nifty ball control tricks, it could be 90-minute long heart attack for Mascherano and Abidal.

What a fucking shambles this defense is
This could end up worse than I thought. 3-0 or 4-0 at this rate. It's the exact opposite of a Barça performance so far - they literally haven't strung 3 passes together. Thiago with 3 mistakes already. Messi hardly in the game. Alexis always trying a one-on-one and failing.

Terrible decision by Mascherano trying to help Abidal against Benzema, plus Keita was too late against Ozil.
