A new initiative for elite clubs’ youth squads looks set for its inaugural year this coming season as the NextGen Series will give young players the chance to play a European competition.
The tournament is based around Uefa’s Champions League, but will be on a slightly smaller scale and only have 16 participants, with those teams split into four groups.
The line-up for the tournament’s first year has been determined by recommendation in terms of the quality of the academies and invitation; however it hasn’t been established as to how qualification will be achieved in the future.
Mark Warburton, former academy manager for Watford, is the man responsible for NextGen and he told the Daily Mail: “Apart from the exceptional few who jump straight to the first team, many promising young players graduating from academies were not provided with enough consistent high-quality football challenges.”
It is believed that the tournament’s group stages will start in August with the knock-out phase commencing in January of 2012.
It is hoped that the final of the tournament will be held in Abu Dhabi, whilst TV rights are currently being negotiated.
So far 15 of the 16 participants have been announced with four coming from England – Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham – with Celtic joining them.
Although all the groups are not yet known, Daily Mail understand that Aston Villa’s group will include Rosenborg or Norway and Fenerbahce of Turkey, whilst City will face Barcelona, Celtic and Marseille.
The other clubs expected to participate are: Inter (Italy), Molde (Norway), FC Basle (Switzerland), Sporting (Portugal), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Wolfsburg (Germany), plus one more club that has yet to be declared.

European NextGen Series
Just came across this. The idea is basically an U19 Champions League. It's being trialled this season, and may well expand to more big clubs if it's successful. Possibly just a moneyspinner, but could be interesting

Yeah read a bit about this on the city site, sounds decent, it will give the youngsters extra experiance in playing against different styles and at a high level.

I hear that this is just an experiment, and if proven successful, this will evolve into an offcial U19 Champions League.
A step in the right direction, if you ask me... the italian kids really need this kind of exposure, am glad Inter are a part of it

Speak for yourself.
Basel are pretty much the hosts. Home turf, a 2-2 draw is decent.
Our academy side have already won a Euro competition this season, the prestigious Eurofoot tournament in Belgium where we beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the final.
Harry Kane is also playing in this tournament. He's our 17 year old striker getting rave reviews within the club. Top scorer in pre season for the senior team.
In other words, fuck Barca's La Masia products : they might as well hand us the trophy now and be done with it.

A clear overrepresentation of English / British teams, while there is just one Spanish, Italian and German team. Even twice as many Dutch teams. Weird 'competition'.

It's a test run for something more formal in the future, it was just done on an invitation basis - it's quite possible/probable that other clubs were invited and decided not to enter or wanted to wait & see how it works first. I don't think UEFA are actually involved & I don't think it's an anti-Germany/Italy/Spain conspiracy.

No 'conspiracy', just a weird format. How did the teams 'qualify' for it? I just know that Wolfsburg are the current German "A Jugend" champions (U19). What are the credentials of the other teams, the English teams in particular?

It's been invented/organised by a Brit. I guess he started out by getting some clubs he had links with confirmed (i.e. the British teams) & then invited a bunch of clubs from around Europe who have reputation of good academies.
I would expect if it does become an official U19 Champions League, they will develop some formal qualification system based on domestic youth leagues/cups.

Re: European NextGen Series
Well, apparently Man United, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern plus a few others are due to send teams next year.
Currently there are no credentials to play in this, except that clubs with the clever foresight have got involved knowing that having their youth teams playing in a pan European competition and the experience gained is far more productive than shoving them into playing local derbies behind closed door or simply not playing any competitive fixtures at all.
The guy who has come up with the idea is Mark Warburton who was Watford's Academy Director, and managed to secure the funding for it.
People knock English football for it's oft short-sightedness, but this is one that could and should herald a whole new system of providing club youth development opportunities across Europe

In principle, I like the idea of a 'U19 Champions League'. The only problem I see with it is potential poaching of promising, but unknown young players by the rich clubs.

However, the plan is to make this a formal U19 CL soon, linked with the clubs who qualify for the CL.

Hmm. Don't like that concept at all. Plenty of clubs who get in CL do so with zero homegrown players - surely it should be the teams who work to develop a good academy who get to play in an U19 version.

Re: European NextGen Series
Even clubs doing well in domestic youth competition to qualify would be wrong,
as it shouldn't be about results at all. I prefer it being invitational,
for clubs with academies of a set standard.
Wouldn't be good for football if academies started to hoard physical players to be able to enter the Nextgen series.
Tottenham Hotspur are doing great in it by the way, started with an away draw to Basel.
Yesterday however Inter Milan was demolished 7-1, it was 6-0 at 39 minutes when we got a penalty and red card against.
Foreigners mostly on the score sheet, 2 by Souleymane Coulibaly and a hat trick by Tomislav Gomelt (the player sent off).
MoM however was Alex Pritchard who also scored twice.

Maybe a good argument for those against it being the Champions League money teams that should be entered?

If it shouldn't be about results at all, why even have a tournament like this? And how do you decide a 'set standard' without using youth team performances as some sort of measure? I guess you could try and do it by looking at the success of players developed over previous years, e.g. how many of the club's products are still playing at the top level, but that becomes fairly arbitrary & might reflect past quality of the academy rather than present, or might come from them buying in talented players late in their development rather than the quality of the academy itself.

Re: European NextGen Series
Tournament gives international competition experience that helps the players development,
doesn't mean it should be about who's the best at the age of 17 and exclusive to those.
It's to prepare those that have potential to be the best at adult age.

Re: European NextGen Series
But it is an inevitable by-product - if you design something to be like a tournament & say it is there to get international competition experience, clubs will start to aim to win the tournament.
And I ask again, how would you define this 'set standard' of which youth teams should be involved? If this is going to be very beneficial to a select group of clubs, surely they have to earn the right to be there somehow.

I see your logic. This is more about devlopment & exposure, than another sspectator event...rosenthal wrote: Tournament gives international competition experience that helps the players development,

In this regard, I think what they plan to do is invite all the 32 CL teams to participate in this event in the future... which probably is a nice way of linking this as a reward for senior teams achievements, coz those are the only acievements/trophies that matter at club level...

How delightful. It's always nice to further entrench the gap between the rich clubs and the rest
