There's also been examples of teams who overachieve at first (where any kind of survival is overachieving because they are expected to go down) but turn out to have sticking power (Stoke, Fulham, Bolton, Wigan).

Anyway, your problem here is that if you say there's no standout players then really you're saying their 12th place must be down to a standout manager.. By criticizing the quality of the team, you are praising the management skills of the guy you hate Very Happy

Coyle got Burnley promoted then fucked off half way through the first season, no? Leaving them to get relegated..

How on earth is that in any way better than what Lambert has done? It's worse if anything..as he then got the team he moved to relegated as well.

Ultimately, Coyle's record is worse than Gary Megson's...

Slightly bitter, yes. But I still maintain it's way too early to assess how good a manager he is. And for the record, I don't see what was so impressive about Norwich last season.

A team with no standout players managed to finish about Sunderland, Stoke, Villa, Bolton, Blackburn - all faaaaar more established PL clubs with much better squads on paper.

Indeed, it only took him ONE season to turn a bunch of mediocre players into a midtable topflight club. I agree that is impressive Ale

Despite a lot of praise Coyle was getting for various pundits I always disliked him following leaving Burnley. In the end - he probably had something good going there and should try to establish them in Premier League before going for bigger things.

Also, it just proves how good manager Tony Pullis is Ale Not only for his 5:0 thrashing of Bolton in FA cup semifinal which started Coyle and Bolton demise Wink

Very strange. Must be for money. But he was a Palace legend, played there for years and they give him a chance as manager, and he jumps ship for a declining Bolton scratch

But he was doing a such a good job...with the team where he played for so long. I know it's probably money and what not but you'd just think he would've wanted to crack on with his good work.

Probably and he may look back with regret later on, but Bolton are a bigger club with better players. They also have better resources thus leaving better scope for progress in the long run ok

I think people forget that Bolton had Lee and Holden out for yonks. They could get into a lot of established EPL teams. They would never have got relegated if those two were available Ale

Tight at the top currently. We're close to automatic spots.

In other news, Henning Berg sacked after 57 days in charge. Great decision to sack Kean when they were about top of the league and bring in someone who's been sacked by his last club for being shit.

Also Notts Forrest sacked their manager for being 1 point off the play offs and only hours after they'd beaten Leeds 4-2.

Apparently the favourites for the Forest job are McLeish, Keane and Hughes, which can't be making Forest's fans too happy. I can't think of a more uninspiring list.
