I'd be in a seedy bar in Kiev, looking for a hitman to take Steven Warnock out.

strange team selection, I would have thought defending deep and releasing Bellamy would be the way forward - specially with that pacy chap up front for them.

Rafa does the opposite, oh well, we'll see (I wont)

In Rafa's defence, he's attempted to counter Masudi's threat by playing a proper winger down the left from the start - pushing their fullback well into his own half and butting Masudi on the back foot from the get go - and warnock is decentish going forward.

And, Garcia caused them alot more problems than Bellamy seemed to.

Also, Pennant got alot of crosses away and they weren't good in the air, so Crouch picks himself.

the pace will obviously come from pennant and gonzalez... wouldn't be surpised to see either of these get a goal or two.. it'll probably work just fine.. the midfield is strong which is the main area of the pitch... im just not as confident as i was 20 minutes ago Wink

i hope to see great football tonight.. the personnel is there to do it so lets hope it happens...

I know that but read my original post. There was a series of a couple of minutes when he played with xabi in the centre and the game was end to end stuff for a few minutes because of that. Then Hamman was sent on.
Im sure hes good there, its just he with Xabi but as i said be fore it shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Here hoping to enjoyable free flowing football.

Not the greatest match by any means. Garcia has been so unlucky not to score. Especially the header - their keeper knew nothing about it.

Pennant, and to a far lesser extent Gonzalez, are really pissing me off. As soon as they get the ball they want to cross - neither are taking their men on and more importantly neither are passing back infield when nothing is on. It's really disrupting the flow of play.

Teething problems...i'm sure theyll get used to their role in the team fairly quickly.
You cant blame pennant though: First he was playing at no-cross Arsenal, then he went to Birmingham and played under Steve Bruce so...

That's true. I just wish he'd show a little more patience and not think that just because he has the ball he's obligated on each occasion to either take the fullback on or cross the ball. Stretch the play by all means, but pass the ball back inwards if nothing is on.

Probably not from a neutral perspective. I just feel sick from apprehension watching those matches. I hate them.

Still, only 2 more nights until Newcastle can put me into hibernation for the winter months with their 4-5-1... AT HOME. Wink

We've only ever played about 15 minutes of 4-5-1 at home, when Butt got injured we went to 4-4-2 with Duff playing off Ameobi. Very exciting stuff considering the conditions. ok

    My player ratings:

Reina: 7 Brilliant save towards the end
Finnan: 6 didn't look very sharp, but solid display
    Hyypia: 7 solid and dependable
    Agger: 7 solid and dependable
Warnock: 5 Gave away a lot of free kicks
Pennant: 6 good assist, but frustrating
Garcia: 6 should have scored, unlucky, threatening
Alonso: 6 didn't control the game as he usually does
    Sissoko: 8 Dominating
    Gonzalez: 7 threatening, worked hard
Crouch: 5.9 good goal, but didn’t play intelligently

Aurelio: 6 Bit dodgy, but solid most of the time
Gerrard: 6 Threatening, but didn't fill void left by sissoko injury
    Bellamy: Not enough time

So an all important game and a keeper parries it into a players path to score and gets no stick at all?

I'm sure you'd mention it if it was Given or Robinson.

& you can't argue with the shocking game surely?

Uhh.. if it was Given or Robinson I'd say the same thing. It was a decent original save - there's not exactly much he could have done about it. If you check my criticism of Given and Robinson, I've never mentioned anything about their shot-stopping.

And yes, the game was poor, but I don't care. We're through.
