I too have never ever got why a team would leave a good penalty taker till 5th. Shootout is all momentum - just put players in order of how good they are. You just want to get as many goals in the bank as quickly as possible - Ronaldo is better bet than Alves so should go before him.

Not just momentum. Statistically it must be a reasonably high percentage of shoot-outs that don't reach the tenth taker. It's a risky strategy doing what Portugal did tonight.

Credit to Ramos, that takes some serious nerve after his last effort from the spot.

Portugal impressed me more than I was expecting in this tournament, even if tonight's match was as dull as expected. Hopefully tomorrow's semi-final will be a little less cagey and will have a bit more drama within the 90/120 minutes.

Argh, I’m so mad at Paulo Bento, the COWARD.... He has to know Spain has a better bench. Why the hell did he wait for CR and Nani to be tired to replace H.Almeida (who shouldn't have started). The reason Spain dominated the entire ET was simple. Paulo Bento is an ass hole who waited for centuries before refreshing the attack. VdB wanted to win it in 90min and played his cards to achieve that. PB had a real chance and blew it playing for the penaltys. Our midfield can well hold the first Spanish midfield but their second is as strong and we don't have that. Why the hell didn't he refresh the attack by sending in Varela or RQ, removing that useless rock Almeida and moving CR to the middle of the atack???

Nani should've just let Alves take the penalty when he 1st went up - it was clear he was confident regardless, and Alves wasn't.

All in all Portugal can be proud of the tourney they had - 4th semi final in 12 years.
