Hmmm. Wasn't one of your greatest ever players born and bred in Africa - Eusebio.

Portuguese land, at the time, Portuguese nationality. Still our own. It would be the same if we had a game against Argentina and went there calling for Neymar. Stupid thing to do, IMHO.

EMP wrote:As I mentioned in another thread, the Spanish referee was sent home for cocking up Greece v Poland, so there is no conspiracy over the lack of a Spanish referee.

I had wrong info, one of the refs is British. But hey, with the refs saving Spain and Germany after that statement by Platini, some might get suspicious.

IMHO Mozambique was never Portuguese; it was colonised. Portuguese nationality was imposed on them. Was Eusebio given any real choice at the time? I'll bet if Mozambicans tried to claim Portuguese nationality now they wouldn't get a passport unless they were a new Eusebio. Not a dig at Portugal, as other colonial powers are no different. One of France's best players in the 1938 World Cup was Algerian I believe. After football he was treated like shit and exploited by the Nazis. He was executed after the war for pretty vicious collaboration. And England nicked a few great Indian cricketers to play for them as well.

As you have no clue as how many Mozambicans have double nationality or even chose (ore have chosen) to be Portuguese, and the inverse also, it is pretty pointless to continue this theme. They started to get some demands refused because of economical reasons, that's all. Oh, and since a few years the European Comunity laws inforced those limits, even to Brasilians who didn't need any special visa to come to Portugal.

Huh, I obviously wasn't talking about Eusebio there. regarding his choice I made it clear that I was talking about at the start before Mozambique became independent. In football terms he would obviously become a far better player for Portugal and in Portugal, but how free a choice was it under a dictatorship in Portugal at that time?

Referring to Mozambicans getting nationality now is obviously referring to a different time, i.e. now. And you made my point; they are getting refused on economic grounds now. Does that apply to sport? I also made it very clear that other colonial powers had done the same thing. <Ale>

I don't know why everyone had reduced Portugal to be a one-man team. I think the key to their success so far had been the midfield of Veloso-Moutinho-Meireles, and of course, individually all 3 Madrid players have been fantastic. Nani should come out today. It's the striker position that seems the weakest link.

Could Portgual do a Chelsea-Real hybrid over Spain? Progress Ale

does anybody on here believe that Portugal can/will win against Spain ?

would a nice twist in the plot

    ----------

meanwhile, Löw says that they will NOT man-mark Pirlo

the Italian, in turn, claims that Germany are AFRAID of Italy

    ---------

there is a nice little subplot to the Germany-Italy game

Deutschland beat Italy in the U-21 Euro in 2009, I believe

the German players featured in the game: Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Khedira, Özil, Schmelzer, Höwedes

I think three Italians of their current team also played in that game

    ie

our "kids" have already experienced what it is like to BEAT Italy

which historically, of course, has never happened in a competitive match

Poldi even calls Italia "our Angstgegner"

    Very Happy

this game could EASILY go to ET and penalties

    me thinks

Portugal Italy should have been the final in 2000 before France got a phantom penalty.

Yup...and today, the key will be whether these 3 can adapt themselves to stay disciplined and concentrated for 90 mins (or more). They basically have to ensure they can sit deep, close spaces between themselves and the defensive line, and fight to win the ball...and once they do win it, they *must* quickly release it - maximum 2 touches - with an accurate long diagonal pass to Ronaldo or Nani.

Also, wtf is a 'Chelsea-Real' hybrid? Laughing

Portugal are more like Madrid than Chelsea, who showed pretty much zero attacking intent. Portugal have not exactly been all out attack, but have always looked to maintain control and not over-commit...but then when they go forward, they do so explosively. If they try to temper their style by being more close to Chelsea, they will suffer and Spain will find a way through.

You 'progress' bandwagoners need to stop tweaking your agenda to fit every winning team into it. Let me guess, if Germany win Euro 2012, their style will also be spun to fit the 'progress' criteria Erm

Or maybe you can just come out and admit honestly that it's not really 'progress' that you favour, but 'anti-Barça/Spain'.

Chelsea way is to park the bus in our field, not in a compromised way as Madrid did.

Not go forward with explosiveness like Madrid, but wait and pick moments like Chelsea.

Madrid way under Maureen is to get under skin of their players with physical challenges.

Madrid way is to make Ronaldo be the outlet for chances, the striker should be deep letting Pique-Ramos to push up. That would make it much more easier. Drogba-Ramires like central play will not be possible with the players they have centrally.

    To Chelsea-Madrid hybrid Ale

Ever wondered what happened to him? Queiroz is coach of Iran now. I guess he has a slight smile over what happened to South Africa's former boss Pitso Mosimane. He got sacked after a truly disastrous run. Mosimane was one of the leading malcontents who undermined Queiroz there and destroyed a good coaching plan a decade ago - one they return to and abandon and return to and abandon until they ran out of time. Perhaps if Pitso had behaved himself Queirroz would have stayed there and South Africa wouln't have completely screwed up their World Cup and he wouldn't have messed up your team up. If only.

Apparently Pedro will start instead of Silva tonight,I hope so as Silva has been average the last 2 games and Pedro will help out Arbeola in defense more and he gives us some pace up front to stretch the defense.Fabregas will start.
