I think that Rodgers is mismanaging Carroll. He's a player who lacked form throughout most of last season, and seemed shorn of confidence in part because he frequently wasn't starting games and didn't seem to have the wholehearted trust of his manager; but he finally began improving towards the season's close, scoring a few important goals, against Blackburn and in the Cup, and then put in a good showing for England at the European Championships. Now Rodgers has already essentially questioned his mentality, made clear that he isn't an important part of his plans, and said that he will readily send Carroll on loan if a decent offer comes in. I think last season showed that Carroll needs support rather than any sort of gauntlet being thrown down; I think he'll react negatively to and take against Rodgers for his recent comments whereas he could have started the season on a high.
I also don't really see why Carroll wouldn't be a part of any manager's plans. He is fantastic at heading the ball, the best forward at winning the ball in the air that I've seen, and he is very strong, but he isn't some sort of anachronism, purely an 'old-fashioned' centre-forward. For a start, he isn't that good at holding the ball up, but sometimes likes to drop a bit deeper; his first touch isn't perfect, but it isn't bad, and with the ball he has sufficient control and strength to go on good runs; and he has the awareness and the technique to pass the ball really well. He is abused by the limited perception of his game, and by lazy and unintelligent footballers who will always lump the ball to a tall forward.
