Mazzarri has just started his first training camp at Inter. A new coach, completely different tactical philosophy, significant changes in personnel... welcome to a usual summer at Inter.
There is something different this time. Inter are going after younger, unproven players with potential, rather than pensioners or established players. There is a significant focus on reducing wages. Perhaps finally we are taking the "year 0" seriously, one year after the much heralded "year 0".
Inter's senior team moves so far (expected ones in blue):
IN
Campagnaro
Andreolli
Icardi
Belfodil
Botta
Laxalt
Isla
Nainggolan
Dragovic
Out (wages)
Stankovic (5.4m)
Rocchi (2m)
Gargano (3m)
Cassano (5.4m)
Chivu (4.2m)
Schelotto (1.5m)
Jonathan (2.4m)
Silvestre (3m)
If we add the wage reductions of Samuel, Zanetti, Cambiasso (exp) & Milito (exp), Inter will probably cut their wage bill by about 35m! And when the 4 argies retire next season, the wage bill will go down by another 20m. The wages of new arrivals this summer should be about 20m.
Mazzarri is doing the smart thing of evaluating all Inter players in the camp, before he makes a call regarding how badly we need Isla or Nainggolan or Dragovic, and more importantly, who all we can offload to raise funds. That evaluation may take a few weeks, so we will have to be patient. TBF, Inter have already made considerable moves in the market quite early this time (Campagnaro, Andreolli, Icardi, Belfodil, Botta, Laxalt) so fair play to Branca & co. Now the focus is to identify players to sell (apart from Schelotto & Silvestre who have already been identified), and make some sales.
This is clever stuff by Inter, financially speaking. Not sure how good the team will be next season, there is a lot of potential, but will it translate to success on the pitch? I guess the aim of the below squad will be to qualify for CL:
