Brazil IS a 3rd world country that is highly violent. This foreign view is correct. And I think most Brazilians would agree with this. But it's also a very enequal country. You've got Europe and India in it at the same time. Millions of rich Brazilians who have a Western European quality of life in sophisticated cities and millions of very poor Brazilian that have an African quality of life.

The similarity with the USA is that both are big, multi-ethnical democratic republics (Brazilian people being more racially mixed). Brazil didn't meet USA success as a country because, while English colonisers went to USA to build a new, better country according to their views, the Portuguese colonisers came to Brazil to explore/exploit the country, send Brazilian riches to Europe and get rich. There's also another problem: most Portuguese colonisers that came here were criminals that were pardoned if they came to Brazil. In other words, we descend from Portuguese robbers, murderers and pirates, as well as Indians, black slaves and imigrants that came from abroad because of wars more recently, especially Germans, Italians, Lebanese, Jews from everywhere and Japanese (and now the Bolivians and Chinese are coming massively).

Scolari disagrees with me and said Chile is the worst oponent for Brazil in the second round. He'd rather face Spain or Holland due to strategy/style. Interesting, I see Chile as the perfect oponent for Brazil.

He said: "I hope Chile won't qualify. They are very difficult to play against, organised, inteligent, an their system doesn't fit ours. I prefer to face any other from Group B."

Its indeed a shame us Dutchies gave up on Brazil. A thriving nation it would have been for decades. And you wouldnt have been forced the ridiculousness that is Catholicism down your throat. Imagine watchting a Kaka without thanking jesus. And instead of silly immigrants like the Irish, Germans, Italians and Portuguese you would received the absolute high-end of immigrants. Shame we were already quite rich back then so we hardly have immigrants abroad. A shame otherwise it would have been much easier to get a virado à Paulista down here.

You wouldnt have won 5 wc's though if there were a lot of Dutchies there.

    Hehe.

Fey, Dutch imigration in Pernambuco State happened centuries ago, but you still can see some traces in Recife architecture and in the light colour of some Pernambucanos, which is too light for the Northeastern States.

I would be glad to be freed from Christianism as a whole. By the way, Kaká is not catholic, he's a protestant (in Brazil, we call them evangélicos) of one of the hundreds of non-catholic christian churches that were founded in Brazil in the last decades.

Here, catholics are usually much more open-minded than the evangélicos. In fact, most Brazilian catholics don't bother about the Bible. They go to church sometimes in important occasions with their families, marry in a church and baptize their children, but they don't follow the religion for real. The evangélicos, on the other hand, are usually radically religious, pay 10% of their earnings to their dishonest priests, hate gays, don't drink, etc. There's also a third important relegion in Brazil of African origin that, due to Christian prejudice that likes to associate it with satanism, is often practiced discreetly and sometimes undercover: Candomblé in the Northeast, Macumba in Rio and Ubanda in Sâo Paulo (you may search on the Internet if you want to know more).

Oh, and I'll always have a feijoada over a virada paulista. Ale

(there was no significant Irish imigration in Brazil).

I was born in Salvador and lived there for 20 years. It was the first capital of Brazil, when we were a colony of Portugal. In the historical centre you may find many colonial museums, churches and architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. It's also the blackest big city in Brazil with a lot of influence of African culture. Night life is poor. The beaches in the city are not that good. If you want to go to a good beach, you should travel at least 50km to the North.

    Never been to Manaus.

I've been to Rio only once, a long time ago, and I don't like it.

São Paulo is a huge city with everything you may want, just like any huge city in the world. Very good restaurants, nightclubs of all kinds, etc. But there's a lot of polution here and the city is caothic and considered ugly (I think it has its sick beauty).

Yeah, the argies haven't done anything for a while. But they have some great players, finished top of the qualifying group, and will be playing in South America - that continent familiarity does help. IMO they are the 2nd favorites after Brazil. Its hard to see a European team winning it this time, maybe if Spain come in form at the right moment again or Italy play like they are possessed again.

I can see Chile troubling Brazil more than Holland... they got some talented fighters, Vidal, Fernandez, Pizarro, Medel, Isla, etc. Not an easy opponent for anyone. They will cause the Dutch all sorts of problems.

I've never been to Manaus. It's too far away from civilization. Smile

I visited Salvador twice and it was good. The city don't have the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, but they are decent. I didn't enjoy the nightlife.

Almost every year I visit Rio and São Paulo. I really enjoy Rio. The south area of the city have great beaches, nightlife, restaurants and it is pretty safe. Ipanema and Leblon are too expensive, but you can find better value for money in Copacabana, Flamengo and Botafogo.

Like Todo said, São Paulo is really big and have everything that you may want. The city don't have natural beauties, but it's still very interesting.

São Paulo and Rio have in common the awful traffic.

We have a lot to learn from the British experience. It seems they solved the problem there. I hope this new case will mark the begining of the end of this problem. 3 Vasco supporters were arrested. One of them was hidden in the toilet of a bus trying to get out of Santa Catarina State back to Rio.

Comments in the social media and world media reaction to the fight makes no sense at all. These scenes and brazilian authorities deserve to be heavily criticised, but there is no risk of this happening during the World Cup. Hooligans from rival firms fought against each other yesterday. They care much more about their firms than they do about their favourite club or football. This is not the kind of people that will go to WC matches. I've never seen so many women and families in a stadium as I did in the Confed Cup semifinal.

I watched argentina against Ecuador. Ecuador had plenty of chances on the counterattack. Mascherano is overworked - he (along with the back 4) are the only players who defend and their defence is not really top class. Samuel and Zanetti are still better than anything they have at the moment.

In defence, I think Zabaleta is world class. Hugo Campagnaro is pretty good too. Alvarez and Palacio have done very well for Inter this season as well. Inter are going to give them a new set of Argies to play with Smile
