Oh fuck R. Madrid are hardly whiter than white, never seen them cheat. Rolling Eyes

Comparing the contrasting squad sizes/wage bills and transfer spending, and it makes A. Madrid all the greater, they were 90 seconds from winning the greatest double in the history of modern football Ale

You guys are a joke, we set up similarly against Barca and Bayern and you criticize. Atletico employ the same tactic and fail and you talk about them deserving to win. Ancelotti  <Ale>

I was 50-50 before the game, but it's really difficult to like Atletico despite their willingness to go to war, giving 100%, etc...
Also, I really don't understand Filipe being subbed off, he seeme quite healthy leaving. And he had a great tackle a few minutes earlier which was comparable to situation where Alderweld was too lat to stop Bale.

A really scrappy game but they underperformed. They didn't manage a single chance from open play despite being ahead. I thought for sure they would punish us in the second half. They were close to getting through on goal at times when we pushed forward but they never managed to create any chances.

Congratulations to Real - they probably did play the more attacking minded football on the night but Atletico set up really well and reduced them to silly crosses most of the time. If Atletico had been able to hold out then Simeone would be a tactical genius, at it happened they couldn't and such is football. 4-1 is a horrible scoreline for this game though and in no way reflected the difference between the sides.

Atletico will be hurting but they've achieved tremendous things this season and, like Dortmund last season, have given hope to a lot of sides that they can be the next team to overachieve next season in this competition.

Post by Jaime Sun May 25, 2014 3:39 am

The final score is quite harsh on Atletico but as well as they defended for 92 minutes, it's the fundamental problem with 'progressive' football (even Simeone's neu-progressive approach) because it is almost impossible to sustain the intensity and workrate to defend like that until the final whistle. Every once in a while it can work if the opponent had to travel by bus to avoid Mount Vesuvius but more often than not it's too difficult.

Simeone took a big risk to play Costa and it really cost him because an additional set of fresh legs at the end of the game might have been the difference.

Ancelotti also took a huge risk playing Sami Khedira. What a shit decision that was. Like playing with one less player until whenever Isco came on. Shit marking on Godin's goal (of course, even shittier goalkeeper from Casillas fucking hell) and offered zero redeeming qualities. Ok if you are like Super and you don't trust Illara, fine. Put Casemiro ffs. Or start with Isco. Made no sense. But on the whole Ancelotti has gotten it just about right every step of the way. Cheers to the Italian Del Bosque. Ale

Sergio. Fucking. Ramos. This Champions League is his. He just would not let Madrid lose.

Di Maria was immense. Yet another big moment from the guy that people love to hate on this board.

Oh and Jose - you don't get this for reaching the semifinals. Ale

    Congrats  to Real Madrid fans.

Atlético played well until the 80th minute. Then they parked the bus and didn't try to attack. We can't overlook the fact a that they played without their best two offensive players and had no quality players on the bench. If Simeone had all the players at his disposal, he could've tried to play like he did at Stamford Bridge.

Ronaldo didn't play well, but I don't think that we should be harsh on him because clearly he wasn't fully fit. Today he showed how big is his ego. He didn't celebrate the first two goals with his teammates. Then he celebrated an almost meaningless pk goal as if he had scored a golden goal in the world cup final. Ridiculous.

the equalizer from ramos was high quality

overall they deserve it, A. Madrid put so much effort into the first 75 min, but a game ends not after 75 min

I completely get why he went with Khedira. Illarra is built for the type of physical game Atletico serves up. Casemiro would have been the best choice but I think he didn't want to put such a young player on the spot in the final. As I see it we only have bad choices here.

Also a brilliant show from Ronaldo - few could celebrate what such a meaningless goal in such a self-centred way (particularly after being largely anonymous in the game)

Re. this Madrid in history, surely they will be remembered for their semi-final shellacking of the favourites - going toe to toe and winning decisively. Extreme matchups like an injury ravaged Atletico distort the game, which is nobody's fault. When they were in a position to play an even match this side proved themselves.

Godin or Gabi for MotM, despite the result. Di Maria's erratic crossing (particularly poor in the first half) shows his limitations even within a good performance.
