As many of you know, there is talk of a possible reduction in the number of teams residing in Serie A and Serie B and a growing disdain for the format of the Coppa Italia.
As a result, I am going to throw around some possible solutions that the Italian Football Association may use to improve its competitions.
Proposal #1: 16-team Serie A, 18-team Serie B, and revamped Coppa Italia
The Coppa Italia would now be similar in format to the Champions League with a 32-team double-round robin group stage follow by two-legged ties in the knockout rounds leading to a one-off final.
Proposal #2: 16-team Serie A, 18-team Serie B, and slightly revamped Coppa Italia
As it is, the Coppa Italia heavily favors the top teams as the top eight sides from the previous season are entered straight into the Round of 16.
In this proposal, all Serie A sides would be entered into the Round of 64.
Proposal #3: 16-team Serie A, 18-team Serie B, and Coppa Italia that is exactly the same format as the Spanish Copa Del Rey.
The Serie A sides enter the Round of 32, and the knockout rounds from that point forward are played over two legs, with a one-off final.
Proposal #4: 18-team Serie A, 20-team Serie B, and slightly revamped Coppa Italia.
In this proposal, all Serie A sides would be entered into the Round of 64.
Proposal #5: 18-team Serie A, 20-team Serie B, and revamped Coppa Italia.
The Coppa Italia would be a single-round robin 40-team tournament, with 8 groups of 5 teams. Group winners advance to the Round of 16. 2nd and 3rd place teams
face off in preliminary round to enter Round of 16. The knockout portion would be one-leg ties with the exception of the semifinals, which would continue to be played
over two legs.
Anyone have any thoughts? Any suggestions or proposals?
