Post by Tweesus Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:45 pm

Newcastle boss Glen Roeder says his side must eliminate defensive errors to avoid another European embarrassment.
The Magpies face Latvian side Ventspils in the second qualifying round, first leg of the Uefa Cup on Thursday.

However, they are haunted by the errors led to their exit from last season's Intertoto Cup semi-final and have been sloppy in pre-season friendlies.

"Mistakes that were made can be ironed out but players of this quality should not be making them," said Roeder.

Newcastle failed to qualify for the Uefa Cup last season from the backdoor route of the Intertoto Cup when they crashed out to Deportivo La Coruna in an error-strewn semi-final.

Roeder's team have conceded six goals in two recent pre-season friendlies.

The Magpies boss added: "Maybe with them being friendlies we were a little too relaxed when defending.

"We left keeper Shay Given exposed but we have got those games out of the way now and hopefully those mistakes will be eradicated."

What the fook does Bramble need to do to be dropped?! Why aren't Taylor, Zog, and Milner playing??? Evil or Very Mad

I reckon it'll be tied at 1-1 until 60 minutes when Milner and the Zog are brought on and it ends up 3-1. afro

the mickey mouse tournaments the UEFA comes up with.
Hardly anyone interested in the UEFA cup anymore and then there's the qualification tournament for the UEFA cup for the likes of Ventspils, GO Ahead Eagles, VFB Münster, Kerry, Newcastle, and FC Wladiwostok...

Nonsense, he wasn't at fault for any of them. He came on in the 2nd half when our defence didn't look too bad. scratch

the point is that last year some of Spain's biggest teams were fighting their way through the Intertoto competition in the middle of the summer and then failed at the final hurdle. In the process, they made their season too long, and players got overtired at the end of the season.

In the meantime, other teams in the UEFA cup have to go to far away places like Azerbaidjan, Lithuania, Finland and Iceland to play minnows. Games that no one seems interested in, that have a major impact on the success in the national league (e.g. Espanyol), that aren't shown on TV, where 5000 people go to see the game, only because you get a free ticket with every season ticket, that probably cost more money than brings in revenue, where coaches decide to play their reserves, and finally after 15 rounds of games, if you're lucky enough you get to the final and win... what exactly?

Does a club like Newcastle really need the UEFA Cup? Let alone its qualifiers? Shouldn't you be focussing on the EPL?

    @ toon h

That may be the case in Spain but in Newcastle they will pay for tickets in their droves and will pull in 45,000+ attendances.

People in England LOVE European competitions

Yes, yes it does. It's a competition that we've got a good chance of winning. There's also nothing like the latter rounds of a european competition. I missed it last year.

But boro and Bolton ALWAYS have poor crowds - neither of them fill their stadiums in the league either.

Blackburn also can't ever fill their stadium.

West Ham, Spurs and Toon will get good crowds though

anyway the fact remains, that for teams like us, the UEFA Cup is special...obviously we cant pack the stadium every game because thats just the way it is not everyone can afford a long FA Cup run/UEFA cup run AND a season ticket.

Nevertheless last seasons UEFA Cup run was probably(after the CC Cup) the best footballing experience of my life.
