I think Given is overhyped a bit. Don't get me wrong, he is good keeper but not as good as most people suggest. To play for a midtable team where u can make twenty spectualr saves in every match is quite different from playing for a top side where u are expected to save that single chance the opposition might get.

So Given isn't as good because he makes more saves. Nice.
And i think you'll find that Given has played in MANY games where it's come down to 1 or 2 chances, we aren't a shambles for 90 minutes of every game you realise.

The problem is that you see keepers letting in goals for Championship sides left, right and center, make a few great saves and not be hyped as much as Given. Unless he gets clean sheets (in spite of his defense) he will never be truly rated - hence why he is still at Newcastle.
People rate Given above Cech because Cech isn't on show as much - yet we don't know how he would perform under the same circumstances. I can't remember seeing Cech make even a slight error.
Given's main attribute is that he doesn't seem to make gross mistakes - any mistakes by keepers instantly bring down their reputations in the eye of the media.

Given = A poor Man's Cassillas
He very good, but any 'keeper that sees a lot of action is bound to look good.
The best 'keepers (Buffon, Cech and Schmeichel back in the day) can go through a long period without being called into action, and still come up with a game winning save. That's more than just natural ability, it's also focus.

Anyway Jussi wins it for me - like Gardner he's been so loyal to Bolton, and is still one of the most important players even though the squad has undergone numerous turnover and has moved up another level.

low down in the league...Kimbo wrote:Owen Thomas wrote:The Given hype is getting really funny.
Just ask yourself, where would Newcastle be without him?

Wait a second...
A perfect example of a 'keeper making sure his team only needs one goal for victory. Jussi stole those 3pts for you.theflyingfrenchman wrote:Jussi is awesome, he's really improved over the past few years. Before his kicking was really shit, now it's actually pretty good. And after that Balckburn game, no keeper can come close to him.

He's not stealing 15 pts a season like Schmeichel used to, he makes sure that defeats don't turn into hammerings and burials.
