    Gonzalo Higuain Empty Gonzalo Higuain

Post by Freddie Or Not Wed Oct 25, 2006 9:47 am

Sounds like Higuain could be heading for these shores
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [From Sky Sports]
Gonzalo Higuain is being lined up for a move to England, according to Pini Zahavi - who now controls half of the River Plate starlet.

Zahavi, along with a group of investors, has finalised a deal with River Plate for a reported $6 million (£3.2 million).

Now the Israeli super-agent has confirmed that a move to England is looking the most likely option for a player who over the past few months has attracted scouts from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Lazio, Milan and Internazionale.

Higuain emerged as a real star of Argentine football earlier this month when he bagged two goals in River's 3-1 'Superclasico' derby win over arch-rivals Boca Juniors.

"The boy is special," beamed Zahavi.

"He is big, strong and well suited to the English game. English football has become stronger than Italy and Spain and players want to try it for themselves."

Zahavi admitted buying a big stake in a player as young as Higuain, just 18 - was a risk.

"I recommend players to investors," he expanded to the Daily Express.

"The idea is to locate them when they are young on the way to the top, the risk is bigger but they cost less."

While a tug of war for his services looks set to ensue in the near future, a battle over his international future has already begun.

Although he has spent virtually all his life in Argentina, Higuain was actually born in France as his father Jorge was plying his trade as a footballer there.

Now France are hot on the trail of one of the brightest prospects in South America and - as with David Trezeguet - are hopeful the player will snub Argentina.

"We know the player, and he is interesting," French coach Raymond Domenech opined recently.

"One does not play at that level if he does not have talent and the second quality is that he could be French.

"He is a player we are going to follow closely. But we can select him at any time as he is French."

Higuain has thus far refused all call-ups to the Argentina youth set-up - but the player is yet to disclose a preference for either country.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which team would benefit from him most? I've only seen Youtube videos so I'm not really in a position to judge him. Anybody seen him play a whole match?

I saw him against Boca (awesome) and Banfield (quiet, but clearly a presence). To be honest, I know it's hard for a full opinion on the basis of 2 whole games, but I don't think the YouTube videos do his all-round game justice. They just make him seem like another goalscoring striker.

The word that immediately springs to my mind when mentioning him is awareness. Of his, the balls, his opponents and his team mates position.

As for the team who would benefit from him most then definitely Liverpool - bias I know, but true - We're the only team that lacks that sort of player in the first team I think. Maybe Chelsea could make a case for something similar, but they don't lack the cutting edge that we currently do.

Obviously someone who's seen him more can probably give you a better idea, but I'd say the Kaká comparison is fairly apt. He seems to start further forward than Kaká would (preferably) however.

I didn't watch it live. T'was on 5 during the middle of the night and I couldn't sleep.

The Banfield match was on there too, more than once actually. I think Five are showing the games twice a week (thursday and sunday) in the middle of the night Ale

Don't want to sound anti-English, but latin players should stay away from the premiership. There are definitely a few that succeed, but on the whole the players just seem to become more physical and less creative. He should go to Spain, Portugal, Italy or France..

Premiership clubs should focus more upon Eastern Europe, as there is more chance that they will adapt, and they can also be very technical..

I think alot of it is down to the manager. For example, I don't think Veron appreciated the hairdryer treatment from Fergie ('m not saying it's all he does, just giving an example) and perhaps he'd be more at with Rafa's more withdrawn, pragmatic approach.

I don't think it's entirely down to footballing reasons. With all due-respect to Zola, more talented and physically stronger players have failed in the premiership. None of them had the eviroment that Zola did at Chelsea though - atleast when he arrived. This gave him time to really integrate himself into the more British way of life.

I think for a player to succeed here these days it's far more down to the enviroment and their own personnal application off the pitch. If a player has a familiar(ish) enviroment when he arrives and a willingness to learn to adapt off the pitch (much like he needs a desire to adapt on it) then that can help him through the first few months as he integrates himself into a new way of life.

It's wrong for us to assume that just because ourselves and United have argies that Higuaín would immediately become friends with them - If I was at a South American football club and there was a single Britain there, that doesn't mean he's going to have a personality compatable with my own - but they will be able to relate, and offer advice, as they've gone through a similar experience just recently.

Definately down the the manager, i'm yet to see a player able to pick passes like Veron, not Riquelme, not Zidane, not Alonso, not Scholes, not Pirlo.

It's just SAF had no idea where to use him.

We should be interested if he could play the Scholes role(or a further one) but if he plays Rooney's one then I dont think we need him as we have Rossi as a alternative there.

Can see him go to France first then a bigger club. He's mom's French, so I guess he'll follow his roots. This guy looks like a big prospect, but who isn't in Argentina. He is going to ask the French Nationality because he wants to avoid the visa chaos. Funny he was born in Rouen (France's Britany) from a Argentinian father who played at that time somewhere in France. In brief, that's the same of story of Trezeguet, who at first when he was speaking French had a very strong Spanish Accent.

I've seen a fair bit of him. He's supposed to be Rivers best prospect for years, but I've not been overly impressed to be honest. Good but not great.

I've seen a bit of Higuain - He seems to remind me of Teddy Sheringham... just seems to have a combination of awareness, physical strength, and elegance all at the same time.

    Time will tell, however.

Watched River against Rosario Central in the middle of the night - he was really good again.

Set up Falcao's goal with a great touch and chip into the box. And, he almost scored a fantastic bycicle kick with (literally) the last kick of the game. Shame it came off the post.
