The Real White Pele wrote:Basler was a rebel in every sense I remember. What a pr*ck, but equally what a talent.

    We've also forgotten about Gazza!

A genius one minute, a hotheaded idiot the next (Fa Cup final injurying himself), crying infront of millions (1990 V Germany), burping into microphones and outraging a nation (at Lazio), telling Norway to F*ck off, wearing fake plastic tits, setting people on fire (jimmy 5 bellies),

totally invisible in a game (Euro 96 V Scotland) before doing the incredible (again, Euro 96 V Scotland), or simply being a breathtaking midfield player (V Holland Euro 96, Italy in Italy in 1997, Belgium in 1990),

an erratic, flawed genius. Who should never be forgotten. Especially by Tottenham fans
Definitely the memory that sticks with me--along with those fugly grey kits England wore at the EURO '96. And something about him wanting to get into a plane's cockpit before or during a flight...

Perhaps I'm not getting the point here Obispo, but isn't Ronaldinho perhaps the only one out of all the players you named in your original post who tries something special even though it only comes off 5 or 6 times out of 10? He's probably the most unpredictable and rebellious, it's just that his tricks have been channelled by Rijkaard to be effective - he still lets him do the tricks, but only as long as they take the ball in the right area.

Antonio Cassano comes to mind now, with all the goings on at RM since the match at Getafe bringing it fresh in the mind.

Obviously Gazza must be mentioned. Good call that. What about Paul Merson?

I suppose Winston Bogarde was a bit of rebel. He wasn't a rebellious genius though, so maybe he doesn't count.

Fidel Castro used to play in Havana United's reserve team, as a tough tackling central defender. I would think that makes him the "biggest" football rebel.

    Romario..

Just for that stunt where he lay down on the pitch, forcing on the stretcher, because he didn't want to play any longer and the manager refused to sub him..

I'm going to throw Tino Asprilla's name in here. Now there's a flawed genius if ever there was one. Decked Chilavert during a world cup qualifying game. The definition of unpredictable. ok
