I was there. Cris was once again humilliated by a teenager. You´ll will never convince me that he is a reliable defender, let alone the best defender in the world.

Canavaro is the main man!, he is the greatest IMO, on top form

Being the best in the world is such a momentary thing... at everone's best form, Cannavaro is better than all the players you mentioned below, except maybe Nesta. But both of them are playing so badly at the mo, that most players you mentioned are better...

so I guess it depends how you look at it...

as for WPOTY, I would prefer Buffon to win it. But rather have cannavaro than any attacking player... its time the defenders get some recognition.

I'll tell u why defenders don't usually win such awards ( deservedly so) , it's quite simple: It's far easier to defend than to attack. A mediocre defender can look great in an extremely organised defensive team but a mediocre attacker can't look great in an attacking team.

Your arguement would make sense if 75% of the time an attacking player has won the award, and only 25% of the time it was a defender. But as things stand, almost 100% of these awards go to attacking players, and that is ridiculous.

There are legendary defenders who are far greater than their attacking counterparts, but are not given the same recognition... for example, Baresi or Maldini have never won the Ballon D'or, but Owen has... that to me is as ridiculous as it gets.

I wouldn't be unhappy with anyone winning it. In a year like this, where no clear winner was available, they should give it to us, the fans. The ones who really make the sport come alive. A lifetime recognition award for all the poor souls who spend their last penny to support their teams and their countries.

Tweedy, so would I... Buffon would be my pick - someone who has been quite unanimously the best in his role for so many years now, and has had a excellent year as usual - and also won the world cup, and the best keeper of the tournament award. And there is this extra about loyalty to his club.

Buffon is the most deserving player in the world this year... perhaps Cannavaro winning the Ballon D'or wouldn;t be that bad a thing, coz then Buffon can win the WPOTY.
