Finishing 4th in the Premiership Empty Finishing 4th in the Premiership

Post by Batman Thu Nov 30, 2006 5:37 pm

What are the chances of Bolton, Portsmouth or Villa finishing 4th in the Premiership, therefore qualifying for the Champions League?

Teams that finished 4th in the league over the last 5 season:

    01/02 - Newcastle, 71 pts
    02/03 - Chelsea, 67 pts
    03/04 - Liverpool, 60 pts
    04/05 - Everton, 61 pts
    05/06 - Arsenal, 67 pts

I have worked out that if a team wants to finish 4th in the league this season then they will need to get around 65 points in the league.

So for Bolton or Portsmouth to finish 4th in the league then they need to.....

Bolton and Portsmouth, played 15 games = 24 pts

Win 12 out of the 23 remaining games = 36 pts

    24 + 36 = 60 pts

This will leave them with 11 games in which to get 5 pts to reach 65 pts

    Can it be done?

Bolton and Pompey lack squads to finish 4th , they probably have a first team that is good enough but are their replacements good enough , I dont think so.

    Tottenham will have played at:

    Arsenal
    Liverpool
    Man Utd
    Bolton

    after this weekend.

It'll just be Stamford Bridge & Fratton Park after that, as away games I'm really weary of.

We've only lost 1 of our last 14 in all comps, are 5 pts behind Bolton with a game in hand.

And most importantly - we are only 1 pt worse of compared to the corresponding fixtures of last season.

We are definitely in the hunt.

Villa and Pompey may spend (probably would spend as they got new owners) but Bolton ?
And it is not neccessary that new players adapt quickly to the league or the team.

Well Liverpools problem is clear, Pennant is shockingly poor, Bellamy is worse than Cisse, Gonzales at the moment looks no more than a pace merchant, Gerrard having been out of form, and a long list of Injuries.

Dont know what the Gunners excuse is, perhaps too many youngsters, perhaps why they are inconsistant.

What makes you think it's a joke? I think Batman is making a legitimate point - Bolton, Portsmouth and others do have a chance of finishing in the top 4 this season...so what if you're just 2 points off 3rd place? Keep up this type of form (ie. drawing at home against Portsmouth, ironic that they are being discussed here for the top 4 spot) and inability to score and you may well finish 5th or lower...I have nothing against Liverpool, just the way you're dismissing this thread as if it's a given that Liverpool and Arsenal will finish in the top 4, seeing their form and results so far this season.

It will be interesting to see how Bolton last the course of the season. It seems to me that their gameplan relies on the players putting in an awful lot of effort, and they seem to run out of steam a bit towards the end of the season. If Bolton are to do well I think they need to get a lot of points between now and the end of February to try and build a bit of a cushion and put pressure on the other chasing clubs.

Of course Arsenal and Liverpool are favourites for 3rd and 4th but other teams can qualify like Spurs. Even Villa if O'Neil is given serious money in January by Lerner.

Arsenal & Liverpool fans are behaving very arrogantly over this.

Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus are just some of the huge names that have failed to make it into the CL qualifying spots via the league - remember Madrid only got into the 2001 competition as reigning champions.

Liverpool are missing their best two central midfielders, and Le'Arse are as fragile as ever on the road. I still think we are the strongest team outside the elite and are the best equipped to break into the top 4 - and after this Sunday, we'll have had 4 of our most difficult 5 away fixtures like I've said.

Plus we are 1 pt behind on the corresponding fixtures from last season this time around - where we ended up with 65 pts. Spurs are in the hunt. 5 pts off with a game in hand - hardly impossible ground to make up Rolling Eyes

I am not - We do not have the divine right to qualify for the CL each season, I said this last season when we had a real shocker of a season.

Whoever accumilates the most points from the 38 games deserves it.

No arrogant comments from Arsenal fans, only Liverpool ones. It's very possible that one of those two won't qualify, FACT! I don't think it will be Tottenham though, i would put my money on Bolton if not Pool or L'Arse. affraid Could flyingfrenchies prediction come true.

Pool fans should remind themselves of what happened in 2005, you don't have a divine right to CL football. ok

    Kimbo,

Bolton haven't been away to any of the "big 4" yet.

We've been to Liverpool & Man Utd already, and have Arsenal away this weekend.

We've been to Bolton also, there's still a return at WHL to come.

They've got to visit all of last season's top 5, whilst our toughest away game left apart from Stamford Bridge is Fratton Park.

1 .Chelsea: Man Utd have done brilliantly to make a race of this league, but they don't have the squad depth to go toe-to-toe with The Chelsea juggernaut over a 38-game season

    2. Man Utd: They've broke away from the others enough to secure an automatic place.

    3. ???

It's ridiculously open. Obviously Liverpool & Arsenal have the stongest squads, but like I said you Scousers a having an injury crisis during the period of the season where I expected you to be at your strongest, and Arsenal still haven't sorted out their shaky away perfomances.

I just think if one of the big 2 doesn't make it in, then Spurs are the most likely contenders for a CL place, It was only yesterday that I realised that we can still make the CL, after lamenting our shoddy start to the season. It makes the loss at Reading even more infuriating.

Tottenham were extremely unlucky not to make the top 4 last season, but the Kremlin intervened that day too. I believe they have a very good opportunity to get a Champions league spot. But theres still a long way to go, and if Liverpool and Arsenal can get some momentum, they are obvious favourites.

however if they can't then perhaps Bolton may be another candidate, their game against Chelsea highlighted how difficult Bolton are to play against.

Its certainly open, and i feel i'll be more able to make a judgement after our two clubs meet on the 30th of December. The Christmas fixtures are potential banana skins, and you dont want to be chasing the 3/4 th spot in 2007 they would much prefer to be in the top 4 for the final 4 months of the season, i know our fixture list up till then is pretty good up untill then and it set up for us to pick up some points and momentum. So im still confident that Liverpool will get into that top 4 bracket sooner rather than later.
