Anyone could beat anyone in a one off, but in a league, Lyon in the Premiership wouldn't have the depth to compete for the title, 4,5th place would be my estimation.

    ?????

Coupet + Vercoutre. Two excellent goalkeepers, Coupet probably the second best goalkeeper in the world.

RB: Clerc and Reveillère: Both French internationals
CB: Cris + Squillacci= Cris is one of the best defenders in the world and Squillaci is very good too.
CB: Cacapa + Muller = Very experienced players, rarely make mistakes.
LB: Berthod + Abidal - Abidal is the best LB in the world, Berthod is a French youth international.
DMF: Toulalan, Diarra = Two French internationals, both Makelele's designated sucessors.
AMF: Juninho, Tiago, Kallstrom: The real shame is that one of those three is on the bench. All of them are excellent.
RMF: Govou, Wiltord- Well Govou, on form is close to being as good as Ronaldo. Wiltord is still decisive
LMF: Malouda, Ben Arfa: Malouda can, on form, be the best winger in the world. Ben Arfa is finally starting to show why people dubbed him the next Zidane
CF: Carew, Benzema, Fred: Three great players, all capable of great things.

So it's not squad depth they're lacking. Or talent.
with all that quality how do you explain their lack of cl succes in the last couple of years. and i see succes in cl as reaching the semis btw.if they are to concedered a top team they cant break down mentally like they did last season in cl vs milan.they are a very good team when it comes to teams below them and they are very humble but when it really counts they have not shown true quality(porto, psv, milan). of those teams they should have been able to beat porto or psv. and when you consider that this team has played together the last 3-4 years they should be better. i think they are overrated but i'll give them this year to prove me wrong and it starts with roma.

People like to hype Lyon up time and time again.

I think they're a fantastic side don't get me wrong, but they're not a team I would have as favorites for this trophy every year

Yeah, it's not as if we are all saying they're crap. They are certainly top 10 in Europe, but Pierre and other Lique 1 lovers consistently masturbate over them every season and it's starting to grate.

People hype Lyon because they play beautiful football and don't come from the big 3. PSV and Porto, the two other teams who managed to make a real impact on the competition in the past years who haven't come from the big 3, played negative anti-football.

And for people wondering why Lyon didn't go through against PSV, the answer is simple: they were robbed. then last year against Milan, they had Juninho and Tiago suspended (which is why they bought Kallstrom), and were through until the 89th minute.

This year they should do it, if they don't draw Chelsea or Barça n the QFs.

    Ah good god how pathetic.

Lyon played just as much counter attack football as Porto and PSV did. It always baffled me how people can make opinions about 3 games they see from them. Porto and PSV were not overly attacking yes, but they were just as effective.

Lyon lost due a magnificent save from Gomes and because they were the coolest team in the penalty shootout. Nothing more, nothing less.

Note how many if if if there are. If MvB didn't less his man run in their semi against Milan they were also through. Its just a non-argument.

Anyway, Lyon have avenged their defeat to PSV last season. This year they are very much stronger: They've got rid of Diarra, but they've brought in two very good DMs, both young French internationals. They've got rid of Pedretti and brought in Kallstrom, and they got rid of Monsoreau to bring in Squillaci. Very shrewd pieces of business, the squad looks much improved now. This year, lyon have taken 50 points from 19 matches, six more than last season: all this with their three strikers out!

did you actually see the psv side that played milan in the semis. they were attacking way more then lyon did. psv were all over them both at san siro and at home. whereas lyon started to defend their lead they got.

From what I've seen this Lyon team plays good football at times. I think perhaps some people don't like to admit that there is good football outside the top 3 leagues, and perhaps others that like to make more of it than what it really is.

I think the fact that quite a few of them have been at the club for some time is a positive point, and those that are new have fit in well from the looks of things.

In comparison to a club like Porto for example, Lyon's squad has been able to gel to a much greater degree. Porto is putting this current squad together so it'll take some time to get the best out of it.

The notion that poorer clubs have to play negative football to do well isn't a given. Although Porto did play a much more negative game in their winning season, the played very good football the year before in winning the Uefa Cup and even Mourinho has admitted that was his best ever side.

Again I think part of the problem is that some people right off any club outside the main contenders without actually knowing anything about them, while others compensate by overstating the ability/chances of these outsider clubs. Lyon has a good squad and could win it or they could not...just like anyone else.

What they do need however is to not buy into their own hype as the rich clubs often do as we've all seen where that will get you.

    "Shit League".

    Very naive.

You look at the results Monaco had v Real and Chelsea, Marseilles v Newcastle, Liverpool, Lille v Man U, Marseilles v Bolton and that's very daft.

PSG (Landreau, Yepes, Rozehnal, Rothen, Kalou, Pauleta), Monaco (Roma, Givet, Yaya Toure, Plasil, Di Vaio, Koller, Menez) and Nantes are all struggling near the foot of the table - you reckon teams like WHU, 'boro and Man City are any better than these teams ?

Look at Drogba and Essien (arguably the best players in our league right now) - Adebayor, Evra - Diarra a star in La Liga.

There are more stars waiting in Ligue 1.

I reckon Chelsea are prob better than Lyon - Liverpool, Arsenal about equal - Man U inferior.

It doesn't say much for the "best league in the world" when Man U can top it
    .

    I stand by that.
