In 2004/2005 the best winger in Europe was old glass shins himself, ARJEN ROBBEN (Kanga Akale of Auxerre was runner up but we've heard little of him since - shame, can he not play without Bonaventure Kalou?)
In 2005/2006 the best winger in Europe was AMANTINO MANCINI of Roma...
...and so to 2006/2007.
Its going to be either:
CRISTIANO RONALDO of Manchester United - Beckham produced his best form for Man Utd in the no 7 shirt the season after he disgraced himself at the World Cup and made himself public enemy number one.
Ronaldo will get abuse everywhere he goes but he had a decent world cup and has been decent in pre-season by all accounts.
No one can doubt his ability - lightning fast, great close control, two footed and a wonderful temperament under pressure (see pens v England twice, Iran - FA cup final?)
or
ABDULKADER KEITA of Lille - I told you on the old board that he would be one of the stars of the World Cup.
He played v Argentina, missed a sitter and was generally shit - oops!
In his defence they played him as a striker.
If you don't remember him from Lille's CL campaign of 2005/2006 that's because he joined last January in the transfer window from a club in the middle east.
He is quick, skilfull and powerful but unlike many of today's wingers - who can pull the ball back from the byline but not actually hit a proper cross - he centers like Beckham in his late 90's prime.
He's 25, which makes you wonder what he's been doing for the last few years, but believe me he is awesome.
* I'm not including Ribery (who had a blinder on Sunday) because he plays too free a role at Marseilles to be classed as a winger.
