Italy have jumped over Brazil to lead the FIFA World Rankings for the first time since November 1993.

The Azzurri have brought the Selecao’s 55-month run as leaders to an end after the South American nation lost 2-0 to Portugal last week.

The World Cup winners were scheduled to play a friendly with Romania seven days ago, but the match was cancelled after rioting fans in Catania killed a policeman following a Serie A match.

There are no other changes in the top five with Argentina, France and Germany all trailing Brazil in second. Spain have returned to the top 10 for the first time since October last year.

The next FIFA World Rankings will be published on March 14, 2007.

Congrats Italy, as Brazilian I am a little bit sad, but at least we lost the position to a country that I love.

Quite right, it was a shame to see a great match end like that. I was outraged, Australia had a REAL chance of causing an upset there.

agree with the general opinion really, Portugal should be ahead of England, in the last 4 years they've knocked them out of the Euros and the world cup

Don't really deserve to be top.....

Losses to Croatia,France and a draw with Lithuania isn't exactly great....

perhaps 3rd but I still rate Argentina as the best and Brazil as 2nd...

why are we even talking about this. i mean things like that happen all the time and then go on do decide bigger things. to win a big cup you need luck at the right time and that is what italy got right their even i dont consider it a dive. despite that none can deny that italy deserves be world champions.

Yeh the way Australia were creating no chances and not even testing Buffon even with a man advantage that the referee had gifted to them they really looked like the could take it

Don't give me that excuse. If he was so intent on shielding himself, why did he slide right into Grosso's path in the first place?

Hiddenk first tired you all out, then brought on fresh strikers to finish it off in extra time.

Italia was 95% out, only the cheating saved you....as usual....

Neill shouldn't have gone to ground but the fact is he didn't foul Grosso, Grosso saw him lying there on the ground and flopped over him, conning the ref.

And Australia were creating chances towards the end of the game, Italy were tiring and Australia were going for it.

jees this i so tiring. italy were not dominated at all by australia despite being down a man. both teams created around the same amount of chances allthough i dont remember australia actually getting a big chance.
also if this wasnt italy that got this nobody would be talking about this.
in 2002 world cup brazil met belgium at the same stage and got outplayed and even had a goal disallowed which shouldnt have been but yet nobody really talked much about it when they won the world cup.

I doubt anyone on this forum takes the rankings seriously rai...I doubt anyone takes FIFA seriously

Ohh believe me, that is still a big issue in Belgium...We all know Wilmots scored a 110% legal goal. With the Belgium defensive nature, the would have probably won that match. And certainly would have beaten England.
