Argentina first for first time
The fact that the teams towards the top of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking are so close has led to another change of leader, with Argentina climbing from third to first place. Having finally ousted Brazil from the number one spot in February, Italy have already made way for Argentina. Apart from that, there are no other changes in the top ten.
The majority of changes in this month’s ranking are a direct result of a devaluation of past results, however. Argentina have certainly benefited from those devaluations, but their 1-0 victory over France in February also helped them claim top spot for the very first time since the introduction of the ranking.
Aside from the change at the top, there are few major movers in the upper reaches of the ranking. In the top 50, Finland’s surge (33rd, up 15) catches the eye, as does the appearance among the 50 best teams of both FYR Macedonia (49th, up 4) and Costa Rica (50th, up 4). Further down the ranking, both Panama (54th, up 20) and Nicaragua (156th, up 11) gain more than ten places, whereas Iceland (86th, up 9), Guyana (95th, up 9), Antigua and Barbuda (130th, up 8 ) and Chad (135th, up 9) all improve their standing by making near double-figure gains. Having recorded the biggest climb, Panama are not only the Mover of the Month but also the team with the two most emphatic victories in terms of the number of points gained.
Only 17 “A” international matches have been played in the last four weeks, which means that so far this year 119 games have been taken into account for the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. In addition to nine qualifying matches (for the CONCACAF Gold Cup), this month’s ranking includes eight friendly matches.
- The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 18 April 2007.

any ranking would be considered a joke. it's impossible to measure how good national teams are without bothering a lot of people.

Re: Argentina top FIFA World Rankings!
To rise in the ranking Portugal needs to win 3 world cup in sucession, 2 european cups, top all qualifing and...
...even then i doubt we would be first.
The FIFA ranking is a complete joke. It is made to put the same countries, no matter how they play or go far in all competitions, in front.
Argentina in first??? What did they do in the last... say 10 years?
This table is completly pathetic.

This is not entirely correct....
One of the reasons why Portugal and Germany are lower on the ranking than they "have" to be, is:
You didn't play qualification games before you organised the tournament! For friendlies you get less points! That could be a bit unfair but then....
Portugal and Germany played also a tourney at home.
The Past has proven that home tourneys give you always a huge advantage to play above your real level....

So how do you explain Euro 2000 and WC2006? We where playing away. We have qualified to every tournament since WC98 (we missed this one , and I still blame Mr Batta for that ridiculous refereeing against Germany)

So is that going to be the excuse from now on. that Portugal hosted a tourney? So did Holland, they're not getting screwed on the rankings.
I don't bother with FIFA rankings anymore as they're absolutely pointless in terms of assessing value. The only shit part about it is they use them to format the tourneys...but since they don't want Portugal to do well to begin with it works for them.
People have claimed we're also low because we did poorly at WC2002, and Argentina didn't?
Pshh...

Re: Argentina top FIFA World Rankings!
It is all based on statistics, the last 4 years are taken into account! In that period the Netherlands had to play qualifications while Portugal and Germany didn't play qualifiers.
http://www.fifa.com/documents/tournaments/FIFA_WR_revision_E.pdf
In a nutshell
Ranking rules:
points weight: W/D/L = 3/1/0
Strength of opposition: A win against a top 10 nation has a higher weight than a win against a lower ranked team
Status of games weight: WC>>EC>>Qualifiers>>Friendlies
Time weighting: games played this month weight more than the month before. Also only the LAST 4 years are taken into account
Regional vs intercontinental weigthing: UEFA: 1.0 >> CONMEBOL: 0.98 >> CONCACAF: 0.85 >> AFC: 0.85 >> CAF: 0.85 >> OFC: 0.85
Perhaps this (new) ranking is not perfect but they try at least to be as neutral as possible. People who are saying the ranking is shite have to come up with better ideas first before slagging everything off!

Re: Argentina top FIFA World Rankings!
There are different rationals possible, and I know its impossible to everyone agree with one.
The only thing it upsets me is that every time FIFA realises big teams are sinking, they change the rational.
The moment Portugal or other small countries climb on this ranking, and the moment big teams flood themselves, you can bet they will change the ranking.
I actually like most of the principles of this ranking, although the main flaw is that you can have teams just playing for the ranking (analysing it and scheduling games and expectations for the ranking), instead of following the natural rythm of international football (qualify, go to tournaments, win games).

it IS a joke, these rankings,
they are designed specifically to make the inhabitants of the major footballing powers feel good about themselves, spurring on consumerism in those countries and dragging down the dollar in the process.

Re: Argentina top FIFA World Rankings!
@The Don
I agree with you the weightings makes a huge difference when you change them. Also it is strange the FIFA changed the rules too many times. The most debatable thing is. They do have a ranking system now but they don't use it when it is possible. It is not clear what they are doing when it comes to a seeding procedure before a World Cup. If they were confident the ranking was good they would have used it for the seeding procedure like in Tennis.
So there is a lot to crirticise the FIFA.
However, in general this is not a bad ranking. Also Portugal would have been lower in the ranking (due to the friendlies vs qualifiers) in the old system.
