    So much exaggeration it's unreal!!!

"Sepp Blatter, the Fifa president, criticised the club for failing to accept an offer of about £2 million."

£1m you cunt, where have you got £2m from?!

"The club have been receiving the maximum £50,000 a week available via the FA’s insurance policy, but that is less than half of Owen’s £120,000-a-week salary"

Fucking hell, and that's nearly 40k more than he actually gets paid! Yikes Rolling Eyes

No it is usually very sound in its details.

Don't see how they could have got his wage details wrong though.

Didn't Sheppard want 10 million compensation at one stage. Doh

So much speculation around his wages. The figure of 102k came from a football rich list which had Owen earning over £5m a year, so some newspaper divided that number by 52 and came up with 102k. The real number is between 80 and 90k and the rest comes from endorsements etc.

And i don't believe the £10m number came from Freddy's mouth, he hasn't mentioned a number to the press as far as i'm aware. FIFA say it's £6m though.

    @ Frodo

FIFA make millions from borrowing expensive players, for free, to play in their crappy internationals, IMO it's only right that they pay something. Same goes for the FA, but i think they've done their part by contributing towards his wages.

If i borrowed your phone and accidently broke it during a night out with Ashley Cole, you would expect me to pay for it. Would you not?

    40k = £40,000

he = Michael Owen - an English striker. He makes about £80,000

yeah they shouldnt get any compo as where would it end??? Its not like Owen had to be frog-marched to the world cup, refusing to play until Sven got Nancy to hold a sawn-off against his head! Accidents happen, if this carries on can we expect to see premiership chairmen phoning up injury lawyers direct everytime one of their players chips a fingernail or gets a nasty bruise on his arm??

As for the inaccurate prose who did it?? most newspapers take work from indepentant journos and all papers are guilty of printing dreadful work. Many a time ive seen articles in a national paper that are criminally inaccurate: a lot of the hacks in the uk know FA about football outside of this island and simply make it up as they go along. I swear some of them get their info from championship manager!!!!

If we weren't entitled to some money we wouldn't have got any. England threw a half fit(if that) Owen straight into the world cup and he got buggered, losing us millions. Our season was effectively over when he went down, it reduced our chances of a top 6 finish hugely.

Sadly, it's the British way. We're a country of negligent, incompetent people, all trying to sue each other and blame each other for our own failings. That's what happens when Christianity collapses.

They didn't Owen wasn't playing for us because we didn't consider him fit enough, England decided they would play him because it doesn't make a difference to them in the long run if he breaks down.

It makes no difference whether Newcastle declare him fit or not, Newcastle had zero choice in him going.

No, I mean we used to be Christians, so we have the psychological bonds of mutual responsibility, but Christianity has collapsed, so the mutual responsibility has become the inverse of what it was before, i.e. mutual blame.

Did they formally state he wasn't fit to play? It's always a grey issue, but there is some say.

He could've said himself he wasn't fit in any case. If Newcastle asked him to, he should've.

I guess you guys can use it to bring in the new signings Mikey O is now pleading for.

Well, I can only assume that they have insurance on their own players since it's widely available, so I don't even know why they're asking. Unless they're so incompetent as a business that they'd spend 17 million up front and 80 thousand a week on an asset without covering themselves in any way.

Saying that, it is Newcastle United. They aren't the most sensible bunch of people, that board.

Owen only joined to play at the WC in the first team, so he was never going to say no - and if Newcastle tried to stop him they'd screw up their relationship with him and end up selling him at a big loss. Its tough on them, and the Times article is crap, but they shouldn't be compensated. The situation is more a result of Owens' individual case than of FIFA rules forcing their hand.
