Sevilla: best run club in Europe? Empty Sevilla: best run club in Europe?

Post by Tweesus Mon Mar 05, 2007 12:53 pm

    For me they are.

Over the past 5 years their policy has been hugely successful. they've sold players like Reyes, Baptista and Ramos for huge fees - other clubs might have tried to hang onto them to help build a serious championship challenging side, and after every sale, there were worries that the squad would be degraded. But in fact the opposite has occurred - its almost as though the sale of their star players has strengthened the side.

Not only have they been shrewd with sales, but also with signings bringing in players like Poulson and Kanouté who have gone from strength to strength.

Like Villarreal they have also been successful in bringing over talents from South America, like their full backs Daniel and Adriano and they have also been chruning out some great youth prospects, this most recent of these to be a great success has been Jesus Navas.

Have any other teams in Europe come anywhere close to this success?

The only team I feel comes close is Villarreal, certainly I can't think of any teams in Serie A or the EPL

Palermo...a few seasons ago were in the middle of Serie B....unfortunately they will end up losing their best players..but the way they've built a side up is great...and to think they have sold players like Luca Toni and Fabio Grosso aswell!

Parma and Chievo did this brilliantly for so many seasons, but it has all finally caught up to them... the problem is that you just cannot keep selling all your good players and replacing them with talent every year... it does not work long term... you need to have a balance, keep some sell a 1-2 players... Sevilla have done a good job there, so far. Chievo and Parma sold a few too many every year, and it was surprising that they made it work for so long....

Sevilla have the potential to maintain themselves though unlike Chievo -Chievo HAD to sell unlike Sevilla who are reasonably wealthy.

Same with Parma - they had serious debts so the money made on sales wasn't invested back 100% - some money was used to pay off debt

But then the small clubs give in when some lucrative offer for their top offer comes their way

And at the same time the players themselves are interested in joining the famous clubs

    This cycle just keeps repeating

Palermo and Chievo certainly set the models in Italy and both manage to play good football as well as balance their accounts in a positive way. Both came from nowhere in Serie B to contend amongst the top clubs in A, Palermo's has been a slow transition upwards, while Chievo's was literally a 'miracle' impact, an explosion.

Both are well run, although unknown really outside of Italy because of their status as smaller provincial clubs and lack of succcess, but i believe you can still have a well run club and not necessarily be successful. In relative terms to their status, both are successful in their own rights, certainly both teams are living a dream (Chievo though are beginning to have nightmares Wink )

It's just a shame that Zamparini is such an idiot, now he talks of resigning (AGAIN!!) Doh

Actually West Ham have done this so many times that relegation this season worries me that we wont be able to do it again...

We get players like Ferdinand and Lampard sell them..bring in the likes of Suker,Foe,Di Canio, Kanoute etc...build up a side with players like Joe Cole,Micahel Carrick etc...then relegation sees us lose them...

SO we come back and bring in players like Ashton,Reo-Coker,Benayoun,Tevez etc...

However for a club of our size etc..I don't think this was the way to run our club...I'm just glad Magnusson knows this...

    Chievo = Bolton

Bolton is a pretty small city and until recently was a small club.

Allardyce didn't really have any quality to sell but rather than but players, he bought old talismanic players whose contracts had expired so as to save money - the wages would be a bit higher but no up front payment was required - likewise he signed good players that were having lulls in their careers and were not in favour at their current clubs.

Its only really this seson that he's had money to spend - which is used to buy Anelka for £6m

Good thread and I agree completely. Sevilla is the definition of "value for money" when it comes to football teams. The only question mark that remains over them is the choking factor. They have choked everytime they've had the chance to take over Barca this year except for last weekend. It wouldn't be surprising if they ended up getting 2/9 points in the next 3 games the way their season has gone.

The problem with Villareal has a lot to do with Riquelme. They managed to keep their best players besides Reina but their entire project was based around Riquelme. This year he turned completely useless so the whole team fell apart. He was their Ronaldinho. Always showing up late to practice, missing training sessions, etc. Villareal accepted this while he was playing well but this year they had enough given his bad performances.

    Edit:

Also, it's a shame that Pires got injured so quickly. I really think he could have been a great short term signing for them had he stayed injury free and got a run of games.

You have to remember after Renzo Barbera, Zamparini completely revolutionised Palermo. He made some big signings when the club was in B (Santana, Conteh, Morrone, Di Napoli) , in 2002-03 his first season Palermo only missed out on the promotion thanks to a last game defeat to Lecce. His changes of manager have been good, his signings have been excellent. Changing Sonetti for Baldini was a mistake perhaps, as Palermo slipped, but then to change for Guidolin, and to rehire him after Del Neri and Papa really messed things up was an excellent admission.

Consider the players Palermo have attracted and helped develop:

Santana, Conteh, Morrone, Di Napoli, Toni, Zauli, Corini, Pepe, Gasbarroni, Terlizzi, Grosso, the Filippini twins, Caracciolo, Makinwa, Di Michele, Agliardi, Diana, Bresciano, Fabio Simplicio, Amauri, Zaccardo, Barzagli, Brienza, Mariano Gonzalez, Budan, Bovo, Tedesco.

If only they had the resources to keep them! bounce

True on Pires - he may not contribute much defensively but as a goalscoring midfielder he is one of the best and those extra 5-10 goals a season from midfield can really aid a title push

It was even a shrewd move to pick up a goal scorer like Saviola last year and now this year Kerzahkov is settling in very quickly. It's all down to Monchi, their technical director. He, unlike Mijatovic, has a very clear plan. Sevilla do a very thorough job of scouting talent abroad and locally. And they have a very keen sense of when to sell a player (in order to reap the best possible selling price).

Not to be overlooked is the managers they've brought in. Both Joaquin Caparros and Juande Ramos have done tremendous work.

Yikes They have tons of money and therefore can't fail...however they have bought tons of players which they have then sold at a loss...paid £30m for Shevchenko...that's not a sign of running a club very well..

Before that they were by far the worst run in the league...if it wasn't for Roman...Chelsea would be in the same boat as Leeds...

Good transfers, majority English, sold on at good prices, 5th last year, good chance of getting UEFA cup football again.

Jol's transfer policy seems to be good..but otherwise I wouldnt say they are brilliantly run....They don't produce any talent themselves either...

Also for a league cup match vs Arsenal..you'd want a full house wouldn't you?? If you was a Sp*rs fan...they decided that ticket prices would be £45,£55 and £65....bad idea...

    Spain: Sevilla, Villareal(in general), Zaragoza?

    Charlton are pretty well run.
