Most Expensive squads in Europe Empty Most Expensive squads in Europe

This was in todays independent and it makes interesting reading:

It is based on figures recieved by the media, players who have played at least one league game, or who cost money and those out on loan.

    Club----------- Squad------Cost (£m)

    Chelsea---------- 25 ------269.2
    Real-------------- 24 ------150
    Man Utd ----------26 ------142.2
    Milan------------- 26 ------113.2
    Liverpool---------- 23 ------102.9
    Barcelona--------- 22------- 102.7
    Inter-------------- 23------- 98.9
    Juve-------------- 23------- 95.5
    Arsenal------------ 26------- 89.4
    Newcastle--------- 26 -------75.4
    Spurs -------------26-------- 72.8
    Atletico M ---------24 --------63.9
    Lyon-------------- 24 --------60.2
    Bayern Munich---- 25 ---------59.5
    Valencia---------- 24 ---------52.8
    Everton -----------22 --------48.8
    Villa --------------22 ---------45.3
    West Ham ------- 18 ---------42.1
    Boro -------------27 ---------33.3
    PSV-------------- 26--------- 30.1

The English teams havent done much with their money, especially Newcastle, Spurs, West ham and to a much lesser extent Liverpool.

Real Madrid and Athletico have done badly with theirs in Spain, Barca have assembled the finest team in the world on just over £100m which is a fantastic achievement.

Inter have also done well with the money spent, although they bought a few players on the cheap of Juve. Milan despite appearing to never spend any money have a relatively expensive squad.

The Germans, Dutch and French dont have any money and PSV with a less expensive squad than relegation bound west ham are in the CL QF.

Your team still has a number of homegrowns like Neville, Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher, O'She anad Brown. It allows you to spend I little extra on special players.

Money will most likely need to be spent to replace these players though.

Sporting's squad cost is about 10 million pounds, and half of it with only one player (Tello, which was a lousy player, now a good player, but is not worth more than 1 million pounds).

Most of our players are free transfers (e.g. Polga, Paredes, ...), others loans (Caneira, Bueno, Romagnoli, Alecsandro - the last two costed half a million for the loan) or academy end products (Moutinho, Nani, Veloso...).

We only spent money in Abel, Ricardo, Tello, Liedson and Tonel - 5 players.

Sevilla is nowhere to be found on that list as you can see.
They have a turnover of "just" 64 M€, and have sold their 3 best players in recent seasons (Reyes, Baptista and Sergio Ramos).

Schalke has a turnover of 123 M€ so no more complaining from certain German posters here that they cannot compete financially with the big boys. Bayern even has a 205 M€ turnover.

I also seriously doubt PSV's squad is that much: they only get young prospects. No-one was the finished article. Cocu's (and probably Kromkamp's) wages are the most expensive.
Gomes, Alex, Kone, Farfan are all big names (now) but not when they were signed. Everybody else, Mendez, Culina, Vayrinnen, Aissatti, Affelay, Da Costa, Alcides, tardelli, Sun Xiang, Simons, Feher, Kluivert (even him) are here on the cheap, or a youth player.

I'd have expected Ajax's squad to be more expensive than PSV's - (although AJax ha slots of youth players), Ajax always spends big (huntelaar, Leonardo, Stam, Davids, Perez just to show) while PSV does the opposite. Low key.

Farfan was a big prospect when you bought him - I remember at the time that Chelsea were being linked with a £20m bid for him and Puro was waxing lyrical about him no the 606 EMB

Thats the cost of the players using publicised figures from the media. It takes into account players who have played one league game and are out on loan. The chances are, that on average they paid £1.1m on each of their 27 squad players. That isnt hard to imagine.

Ps it has nothing to do with wages just the cost the player was aquired for by the club.

There were some dodgy contract dealings going on, but the only way that figure could even be true (30 mil), as that they consider the amount Chelsea paid to poach away Farfan and Alex.

There is simply NO WAY PSV would have paid that amount. They would have looked for the guy next on the list.

Thinking of it, PSV's squad is at least 10mil cheaper if not by by half (15 mil). 18-20mil is realistic, and that's pushing it.

For 20mil squad to show up all these big names. Every year. Razz Laughing

What is also interesting is that Kimbo always complains about Newcastle not being able to compete financially with the top 4 clubs in England.

Yet Newcastle have only spent £14m less than Arsenal to build their squad, which is nearly the equivalent of Walcott, who hasnt done much for Arsenal. So Newcastle have no one but themselves to blame for their clubs faillings.

Eredivisie isn't England. PSV doesn't pay 1.1 mil for players. There are enough players that are well under 1 mil when they got them.
I understand its an estimation by the makers of that list, but no-one in the eredivisie, not even PSV pays 1 mil (simply because they can't afford it) for a regular prospect. Let alone 1 mil pounds. Perhaps for the good ones, but not for players destined to be squad players.

Here we just look at other options/players. And work down the list.

PSV has loads of players that they brought in for less than 500.000, but you shouldn't forget Kone : at 10M euros he's almost a third of what they paid for the entire squad Yikes

Kluivert, Afellay & Aissati are all freebies if I'm not mistaken ok

Exactly, they have the 10th most expensive squad in Europe and havent won or looked like winning anything in 10 years.

Money isnt everything and if teams buy smart they can compete, Seville being a good example as they have a squad that costs less than a tenth of Real, but are top of the Spanish league. Also the top clubs pay inflated fees for players (£24m for SWP, £30m for Ferdinand etc) so their expenditure isnt as high as it looks.

Its an easy excuse to make, for a teams failure.

I think you are confusing with other player - Polga or Rogério. Liedson costed something like 2 million EUR, from what I recall. Searching on the internet I get values from 2,5 million USD up to 3 million EUR.

For my calculation, I used 2 million.

Ajax bought Huntelaar, Leonardo, Stam, Perez for starters (and Davids). Its not even a comparison.
