Best All Round Midfielder This Season?

We've got the Ronaldinho's, Kaka's, Ronaldo's who are a joy to watch, going forward and it would come down to Kaka Vs Ronaldo for the best attacking midfielder this season.

But who has been the all round best midfielder in europe? What i mean is, that has contributed for all aspects of the game; Attacking, Defending etc.

Only one i can think of the top of my head would have to be Michael Essien, he's been solid for Chelsea this year, and had to play at the back at times too. But regardless of that he is an all round midfielder he provdies the drive and energy going forward and defends too.

Essien is the most accomplished all round midfielder around at the moment imho

How you missed him last season.

Essien is IMO the most accomplished midfielder in the game at present - the fact he can astutely play right back and defence too just oges to show what a phenomenal player he is and will be for years to come.

In the CL, Seedorf has been impressive and in the league, De Rossi, Cambiasso, Poulson, Iniesta, Scholes and gilberto have

I know everybody hates him but van Bommel has done a good all-around job for us this year.

Overall, it'd have to be Essien, of course.

One game makes up for a season

Iniesta. Delightful player to watch. Has played DM/CM/AM/RW this season for Barca, and has performed well in all the positions. More importantly, he has added goals to his game, and now scores more regularly. Must be approaching double figures, if not already reached, surely?

Essien is obviously another standout, but he's no CB.

Cambiasso, Perotta, Gerrard, De Rossi, Garcia are others that spring to mind. Don't watch the other leagues enough, but hear Moutinho is supposed to be very good.

I forgot Garcia - he's been very impressive

Did you see Essien at CB in the FA Cup Final?! Some of his tackles were wonderful, but he's no natural.

Cambiasso! Deserves a mention, wait for Bluenine to come on and give his opinion.

Essien was making those last ditch tackles, because he was getting caught out of position. I didn't watch the match, but I watched the highlights.

Mostly due to Ferriera (sp) fucking up.

He had some good moments and some bad, nearly cost them a goal and lost Giggs twice.

Essien hasn't played enough in midfield to be classified as the best this year surely.


plus he rarely scores and rarely contributes a lot in attack so he isn't exactly the all round great he is claimed to be. although looking creative in that chelsea team is a challenge for anyone

he is just an extraordinarily fit defensive force and athlete with tidy technique

it's not a dig as he is probably the most valuable midfilder in the league (well him or gerrard), just a bit of mild criticism

Why not? I don't think he is the best this season, but he's still one of the better all rounders in the game. Scored/assisted a fair few, and obviously he still works hard defensively.

I also have to mention Scott Brown - no one will have heard of him, but he's played DM/LM/CM/AM/RW for Hibs and has been an inspiration week in week out. Look for him in the CL next year, and for Scotland.

Gerrard doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Essien, let alone be compared.

According to other non-Inter fans, cambiasso hasn't been as impressive as certain other Serie A midfielders this season.

I've seen him about 6 times this season and each time he's been very decent, allegedly De Rossi has been better though
