I don't get it either, one of the most important games of the year (especially considering what happened last year) and they couldn't be bovvered.

    @ Fey

You don't rate Sarpong or Goossens ? some Ajax fans feel Goossens ( Left winger. Tremendous talent. This bloke was single-handedly (footedly) responsible for the Oranje Under 17 squad to reach the 3rd place at the WC… Watch that name…) can step up into the first XI and Sarpong could be a long term replacement for Sneijder ..

well, its only really just come about last night...so not much response yet. From the ones who have responded on the boro forum its been positive, people saying its probably the only "spectacular signing" we'll make this season if it does happen...(in reference to Steve Gibson saying a couple of months ago he would be making a few spectacular signings before the window shuts)...i'd also guess they'll be a fair few of the average Boro fans who might not know who he is.

Middlesbrough have offered Heerenveen nine million euros (£6.1m) for star striker Afonso Alves, according to a report in Holland.

The 26-year-old Brazilian was top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season with 34 goals and says he could move to Boro.

"They are seriously interested in me," Alves told De Telegraaf. "Middlesbrough have shown this, too, with their offer."

He added: "For such a big club and for the Premier League, I am always open and the first talks are really hopeful. That will not be the problem."

Afonso is open for the prem

It would be some coup if Boro got him.
'Afonso Alves ziet Middlesbrough wel zitten'

    20/8/2007 8 :24

It's a translation error : you quoted 9 M euros, according to Dutch press Middlesborough has made a 19 M euros offer.

(Heerenveen has already turned down a 15M bid earlier this summer by a Moscow team)
