If there was an european league:

    - which 20 teams do you think should qualify,
    - how do you think the promotion/relegation should work
    - do you think its a good idea??

    Top 3 from England
    Top 3 from Italy
    Top 3 from Spain
    Top 2 from Holland
    Top 2 from Portugal
    Top 2 from Germany
    Top 2 from France

Then 3 places to be decided by a play off between teams from league like the Belguim, Scottish, Turkish etc.

    funny you ask that bluey.

    Do you play football manager?

I made a copy of my database and re-edited it so that there was a five tier European league system - no CL or UEFA, just 5 leagues of 28 teams (no cups).

In the league system I set up, there were 4 teams relegated and four promoted (the last spot through the playoffs)

Regarding the teams in it, in mine I had the teams that on paper were the best in the game, in real life this wouldn't be so fair though.

At a guess the 20 teams would be:

    1. Barcelona
    2. Real Madrid
    3. PSV
    4. Lyon
    5. Porto
    6. Sporting
    7. Ajax
    8. Celtic
    9. CSKA
    10. Steaua
    11. Inter
    12. Milan
    13. Man Utd
    14. Chelsea
    15. Bayern
    16. Galatasaray
    17. Marseille
    18. Werder Bremen
    19. Rangers
    20. Kiev

No more than 2 teams from each country - a few teams that judging on this season shouldn't be there but overall a good balance of big teams and teams on form

Post by bluenine Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:48 am

I would rather use the UEFA rankings to start with the following European League:

    1 AC Milan Ita
    2 FC Barcelona Esp
    3 Liverpool Eng
    4 Internazionale Ita
    5 Arsenal Eng
    6 Real Madrid Esp
    7 Chelsea Eng
    8 Manchester United Eng
    9 Valencia Esp
    10 Olympique Lyon Fra
    11 Newcastle United Eng
    12 Juventus Ita
    13 FC Porto Por
    14 Sevilla Esp
    15 PSV Eindhoven Ned
    16 AS Roma Ita
    17 Villarreal Esp
    18 Bayern München Ger
    19 Benfica Por
    20 Ajax Ned

Make this sit on top of all domestic leagues. Cancel the CL and continue with the UEFA Cup. Make the format of the UEFA Cup resemble the current CL format. Then each year, relegate 4 teams from this European league back into their domestic leagues. And promote the 4 semifinalists of the UEFA Cup...

That should make things very interesting!!

The only problem is that I always want Inter to play in the Serie A... nopt playing should never be an option. Thats why a European League will never happen. You can never abandon the scudetto!!

My problem with this is Newcastle. To me they are the least deserving of all teams in that list. What have they ever done in CL, or in the UEFA cup campaign besides qualifying a couple of of times, compared to ALL these other teams. Even Boro have more right IMO, as they at least got to the final.
All these other teams have put in some work, and either did what was exepcted or over achieved against the odds.
Newcastle is one of the richest, doesn't even get close to the CL, yet always also manages to underachieve.

A European League would never work. The way things are all teams that 'dominate' their respective top tier leagues, would never give up their own league to join one were the success simply wouldn't be as prevalent.
Sure, it would be a spectacle to watch and a test of football, but horrendous on the history of some domianting teams and horrible for the supporters who don't have the money to, basicly, jet set across Europe.
You'd lose the charm of football and end up like Camp Nou full of accountants and tourists who never cheer. Or very much like the last two World Cups.

It would be the greatest thing to football, and the most radical damaging change to the football experience.

I agree... all clubs should play their domestic championships...

Still think that a mini-super-league would be a much better idea than the current CL.... if they could just change the format of the CL to accomodate only 8 teams (all champions) playing in a league to decide the european champion, that would be cool.
