Were the English only mention bombs, wars etc.

I remember well that the day of the 88 EC final there was also the annual TT motor races in Assen.

Normally a lot of Germans come there anyway, this time it was *packed* with Germans (who for some reason didn't want to be in their own country that day).

At one of the overhead crossings (viaduct) like on Fey's picture there was a large banner with hardly anything on it, it just said :

    2-1

it was hilarious to see the impact it had on the Germans, they all looked down after that Laugh

The "I hate your guts" rivalries, mutually, both teams wanting to tear the other one to pieces: Perú-Chile, USA-México, Argentina-Brasil.

Ecuador hate our guts, but we don't see them that way. We are their "world cup" really. We see them as our little brother. One of the Dutch mates said that they have a similar rivalry with Belgium. <Ale>

IMO, southamerica will only come through the day Brazil becomes so big that it will drag the rest of the countries from the water.

Awww Barrilete, it’s not that bad, Argentina is a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL country, it has a European weather and charm that really set you apart from the others South American countries and investing in tourism could be a great way to go. You have no idea how much money France gets because of tourism. You also don’t have the level of violence that we have in Brazil and last time I checked Argentines are very proud of their country.

The country that I most admire in south America it has to be Chile, what they are doing with their economy is fantastic, not to mention the big investments in public education, they truly are turning into a great country, when I see some of my left wing friends applauding Hugo Chavez just make want to kill myself, Chile for me it’s the way to go.

But yeah, in terms of rivalry I don’t really give a damn about others counties just Argentina, I no even care about France.

    1. Brazil - Argentina

    2. Brazil - Uruguay

I don't know why, but beating Uruguay is mopre difficult for us than beating any European team apart from France and Portugal.

As far as I can remmember, the last time we beat them in Uruguay was around 20 or 30 years ago. And they also beat us in Rio in a WC final.

Yeah, we always got along well with the Mexicans. There are quite a few similarities also, Mexico is traditionally well organised and tactically very disciplined, especially if you compare them to other American (North and South) teams.

But we do get along well with the Americans also. As far as the structure is concerned, the MLS was heavily influenced by the Bundesliga, and a lot of American players have played in Germany in the past.

Not only in football but we are two very close knit countries. Most of my friends that go for a year abroad end up in Germany and I've met a bunch of Germans studying in my city. I've had more German teachers than American teachers lol!

It's true, Mexico and Germany (EU basically) have excellent relations.

When Stuttgart signed Pardo and Osorio, I knew that they had made a great deal. Unfortunately for us, it was really great from the start. Especially Pardo was crucial for their success in the league last season. Excellent signing.

I can assure you many countries in Europe feel a sense of rivalry with Zee Germans, not just the English and Dutch.

In Hungary, when Brazil played Germany in the final of 2002, not a single local supported Germany, everyone was backing Brazil to humble the Teutons.

In a similar vein, I and my friends always support the Scots and the Irish whoever they play against,

yet you (almost) never see that reciprocated with either of these groups supporting England.

I say almost, because I recently ventured on a stag weekend with an England supporting Scot amongst the group. It was a totally new experience for me- I actually blame it on the mid bending drugs heralding it a some kind of lucid dream; there is nothing more twilight zone-ish than discussing the positive merits of the English team with a man resounding a Glaswegian accent thicker than Kenny Dalglish.

Ever watched Alan Hansen on MOTD? Wink

I think that Scotland-England is pretty much a one-way rivalry (they care, we don't) just as England- Germany and England-Argentina are largely one-way (the latter less so, maybe, because of the Malvinas factor).

That would explain why 2 out of Otto's every 3 posts are centred around villifying the English?!

Of course Otto doenst represent the everyday views of his fellow countrymen, however there is clearly a rivalry there since England started beating Germany again on what is turning into a fairly regular basis since the turn of the century (2000,2001,U 21's etc, and regularly at club level) ;-)

    @Pele
Beating us regularly? You must be joking, even on club level (that doesn't count in this respect anyway). Very Happy

FF, France is not seen as a rival anymore over here, and even back in the days when there was a rivalry, it was pretty one way also. You hated us much more than we did you, but after the Battiston incident (and a couple of very important defeats), it was understandable.

Our special ...love for Holland will never die though. England comes second by some distance. However, it's more of a love-hate relationship with the Dutch, they are our smaller brother to the West, a spoiled brat you can say, and we always respected and liked their football (not mutual...), so I wouldn't be even sure who to root for in a England - Holland final, for example. Thankfully, the likeliness of such a final is lower than seeing Queen Elizabeth and Beatrix in a mud wrestling fight.

We do cherish the Germans as a very special "enemy", it's indeed something of a love-hate relationship ok

Life would be so much more boring if we didn't have the Germans Wink

I've probably said it before, but whenever I've been to an international gathering it's always the Dutch and the Germans (and a couple of Scandinavians) that end up together and become the best of friends...

The Spanish/Portuguese/French/Italians are more concerned about how they will look the next day, so they all leave at around 01:00. The Brits and Poles will have succeeded in drinking themselves into a coma at that time....but the Germans and Dutch are still good to go for a few hours !

    Wahre Geschichte Ale

....I'm sorry, but I really can't return the compliment and say we admire the way you play football : we absolutely abhor that result football (the same horror-show that Van Basten is giving us these days) and we take it as a personal insult and gross injustice that it pays off.
