Luis Jimenez was going to be the focus of Lazio’s midfield, but he has announced his departure and hinted Inter are his new club.
The Chilean joined the Biancocelesti on loan from Ternana in January at the end of a long legal battle with the Serie C outfit.
He helped inspire his side to a top four finish despite the three-point Calciopoli penalty, but has surprisingly confirmed he is walking out.
“My new club asked that I drop out of the Copa America so that I can be free to join them in pre-season training and I accepted,” said the international.
“The only thing I can confirm right now is that the club I am referring to is certainly not Lazio. Inter? I cannot reveal the name.”
It is a bitter blow for Lazio, who were hoping to give Jimenez a main role in their creative midfield network for next season in Serie A and the Champions League preliminary round.
The loan from Ternana was meant to last until 2008, so it remains to be seen how President Claudio Lotito will react to this sensational snub.
Although he has pulled out of the Copa America, Jimenez had harsh words for his fellow teammates.
“There are players here in Chile who just want to show themselves off. Those who accuse me of a ‘low football standard’ are totally misinformed,” he told ‘Radio W’.
“I was one of the few foreigners to play at Lazio this term and we qualified for the Champions League. In Chile there is too much talk and not enough information.”
