what players are/were the best in leaving a defender for dead, sliding past them as if they weren't there?

Robben comes to mind straight away. He does it and you wonder how.

Messi is another obvious one. Everyone knows exactly what he's going to do, but they still can't stop him.

    Kaka' & Arshavin.

Also Michael Carrick was brilliant at going past defenders for us. Dunno what happened when he went to Man Utd.

But I think they mean more players that don't waste time dribbling but just are the quickest at getting past their men so that would exclude Ronaldinho and the Robinho type assuming I understood it correctly.

So in this sense can we not include pace merchants or are we talking about players that are easy on the eye?

    don't be so caged in.

I remember always wondering how Ronald de Boer used to slip past a defender without actually seemingly any pace whatsoever.

Iniesta also has this same little dribble.

Alan Boksic and Viduka also have/had this ability.

Even when Boksic was at his fattest and laziest, he could still trap the ball, turn and have beaten 3 man in the blink of an eye.

I think of players who beat others not with their pace, but with their hips - players like Beardsley and Hagi. Ginola is the most elegant player I've ever seen with the ball - he certainly glided past opposition defenders, without ever using a lot of pace or an abundance of tricks.
