Yes, I agree with Kimbo in thinking we didn't play too badly tonight, and were unfortunate to end the game without a point. We played too many long balls in the second half and the substitutions Pardew made were nonsensical - after going behind we took off our most dangerous attacking player on the night, and put on a defensive midfielder in his place, meaning that we lost all shape and attacking momentum until the opposite substitution was made fifteen minutes later, with just ten minutes of the game then remaining - but certainly in the first half I thought we passed the ball decently and showed good energy and commitment, and our defence was stronger than it has been even though we ultimately let Everton score an easy second goal. I thought Ameobi should have had a penalty at 1-0; and I didn't think the free-kick which led to Everton's equaliser was warranted.
I didn't expect Everton to irritate me quite as much as they did. I thought they were full of gamesmanship: Fellaini doing his strong man/soft man routine; Anichebe nearly as bad as Fellaini, and I thought he also tried to entice the referee into a second booking for Tiote by repeatedly scuffling with him at a corner; Baines whining lots; and the Everton players hounding Marveaux for supposedly diving, when Fellaini went down under no greater contact for the free-kick which led to Baines' goal. Still I think they are a good side and are so strong precisely because they have a number of facets to their play.
Our problems have persisted all season long, so that happily I'm no more concerned now about relegation than I was a couple of months ago - which is to say, I thought we looked like a club who'd end up battling relegation two months ago, and I'm just as concerned today. We ought to get rid of our manager, but that is an impossible notion given our ownership. We do need to sign at least three players in this transfer window to bolster a short squad critically weak in some areas: a right-back, presumably Debuchy; a centre-back; and a forward.
