Ferdinand is a different type of defender to Carra. Terry is on par imo, and King, Woody and Brown simply aren't as good as him. He's been fantastic for Liverpool in the last few seasons.

Anyone remember how poor brown was in the last game. Worst player on the pitch (even worse than the estonians). I'm not a right back but I'd be insulted if brown was ahead of me. England don't have anyone after neville so they need carragher.
In the centre he is a good replacement for terry (to dominate the aerial battles), to play alongside rio or king (who are faster). Never understood all the fuss surounding woodgate myself, might have all the attirbutes to be a top defender but still got a lot to prove.
Anyway it must be weird to be in a squad knowing that you've given up a week that you could spend with your family to either sit on the bench or not even make the matchday squad. It might be ok to do for a bit when you're young, but not sure if it wouldn't piss me off after a few years.

carragher is never going to get ahead of terry, king or rio.... even after outperforming them and starring in europe for two seasons king gets in ahead of him
he may as well quit the international scene. lots of trips to russia only to sit on the bench after a long hard season are hardly going to be appealing to a footballer who has done it for years
