I enjoy watching Arsenal and respect Wenger for plucking relative unknowns from nowhere and turning them into great players.

However, doesn't anyone wish he actually goes for the well known players who will fit into the team.

Recent examples to me are Kieron Dyer (replacement for Ljundberg but can also play as a second striker) and Carlos Tevez. I am sure Dyer would have chosen Arsenal over the others and Tevez would at least consider it.

    Any thoughts?

Kieran Dyer might be more well known to you, but outside the British Isles nobody rates him. Whereas other iyo lesser known players are rated far higher across the Channel.

    this thread is saints heaven

Arsenal's 'youngsters' are incredibly impressive but of course their side pales in comparison to the great team from a few years ago

there are very few stand out players in this arsenal team IMO. from the midfield and strikers only really van persie and fabregas have any chance at all of getting in liverpool, chelsea or united's team

P.S dyer would not be the answer and they couldn't even nearly afford tevez so he is out of the question

there are many better examples you could have used

but they may just surprise us all this season

Tomas Rosicky, William Gallas, Julio Baptista are all well known players that have arrived at the club in the last 12 months. Usually we never sign the finished article, instead we sign the players that are ready to make the step up like Robin van Persie and more recently Eduardo da Silva and Bacary Sagna.

You have to ask yourself why is it only West Ham that are interested in Kieron Dyer? Spurs the club that favours English players don't even want him. He is far to injury prone, on silly wages thanks to Freddie Sheppard and has a awful attitude.

Tevez is a different circumstance. I would love Tevez at Arsenal, he is a top class player at only 23 and will be a future candidate for WPOTY. But he will cost £30m and we simply can't afford that. His ownership is also unknown and Wenger won't get involved with a player that is in a court case issue. The same happened when we wanted Ronald de Boer around 1998/1999. As soon as he took Ajax to court over his release from his contract we dropped our interest.

I would be utterly disgusted if we tried to sign Dyer.

I agree that it can be a bit frustrating at times, and maybe we've fallen back since 2004 because Wenger doesn't really go for big name players but our financial situation has dictated this policy. I would love to be able to spend £50m like Man Utd and still look to sign someone with Tevez's class. Hell, I'd like to be able to sign one player in the same bracket as Tevez. At the moment though it isn't going to happen. Wenger is doing the best he can with the money available and for the most part he does a very good job.

He had an acute reaction to medication which has caused a lot of his problems. This is now sorted. When he is fit he is a great player. Spurs don't want him because they have 12 midfielders already at the club. I'd rather have him than Jenas or any of their CM tbh...

Dyer was rated highly on the continent in his prime, Juve(and Man Utd) were apparently prepared to spend £20m on him - and he would've been worth it. In hindsight we should've sold him. <Ale>

Was just kidding. There was a time when the looked like a great prospect indeed. At the moment I can't see any use for him at Arsenal.

Carlos Tevez wouldn't match up to Thierry Henry, IF I'm correct but He would be a beautiful replacement for him.

If we signed Dyer I would cry. It would be truly dire! Six million for two good games a season. No thanks.

Who has he actually done this with? Vieira, I suppose. But even he was at AC Milan (reserves) when Arsenal signed him. Fabregas, obviously, but they signed (*ahem*nicked*ahem*) him at 15. Who else?

However, doesn't anyone wish he actually goes for the well known players who will fit into the team.

Nah, because if he did that Arsenal might be somewhere close to winning the league again, and my prediction that they'd never do it again under Wenger would be proven false.

Recent examples to me are Kieron Dyer (replacement for Ljundberg but can also play as a second striker) and Carlos Tevez. I am sure Dyer would have chosen Arsenal over the others and Tevez would at least consider it.

Dyer is too injury prone, and he's English, so that rules him out of Wenger's plans. Tevez's price is approximately double Arsenal's record fee, if reports are to be believed, and Wenger's record with big money signings is dreadful, so he tends to stick to what he's good at - buying technically good, quick players for reasonable money and putting together some relatively pretty but ultimately predictable football teams.
