I dont think Shearer and Ferguson ever particularly disliked each other - there was always a degree of respect, and I imagine Shearer likes the way Man Utd try to play football as well as some of their players like Scholes, Rooney and so on.

Besides, its hard to dislike a club that you consistently turned down, yet who never ceased to flatter you with offers and praise. I recall Ferguson saying a few years ago that Shearer would probably have brought more success to Man Utd than even Cantona did.

That was just a way to smooth the guy, and see if he would sign for them.

Probably true, even if only on the basis that he's have stuck around rather than retiring early because he got bored or whatever excuse the Frenchman gave.

Don't know about that (aaargh, you're making me play advocate of the SAFdevil here !) :

* Chelsea looked okay going forward, but look anything but solid at the back. They just scraped a win because the goalie of Birmingham looked as good as the goalie of Hansa Rostock against Bayern (= so bad they looked bought).

* Arsenal have clear troubles scoring, especially since all 12546 of their midfielders rather go for own glory than pass it to RVP, they also barely scraped a win and with Lemon Lehmann in goal the defence is shaky at best...

* Liverpool looked good, but they too left it till the last possible moment to ensure the win and they too leaked a goal.

* Man United looked like scoring the entire match, their own defence was never put to the test. It was a freak result. Play this match another 9 times and United will score at least one every time


Best thing about this all : it looks like it's gonna be a tightly contented and extremely exciting title race

....Newcastle seem to have a shot as dark horse and maybe even City as uberdark horse ?

We've started again and it looks to be a great season !

Yeah, it was a freak result. But luck plays a part in championships too. Rooney's injury will have more impact on United's season than 2pts dropped yesterday, but I would expect Tevez to slot comfortably into Rooney's role.

The fact is that Chelsea played poorly (by their standards) with an injury-hit team and ground out a result. Man U played well with an injury-hit team, and could not get a result (at home against a bottom-half side).

Agree with Roger luck plays a part , now I expect Chelsea to easily dispose off Reading as Reading will be tired also it will be different challenge in the end all these little things count.
