Would be interesting if its not a prank, them trying to pull a Zola, superstar with no managerial experience.

Not really..our job is one that comes with a lot of security as Gibbo is chairman, not that much fan pressure especially for a "legend"..I dont think it'd take balls to take it. Bernie would fail though, so he'd have to be pretty damn stupid to take the job on.

    Just confirmed.

Win - Win situation for Shearer.

Newcastle go down, it will be the two before him that got the club relegated. On the other hand if they avoid the drop, he becomes even more of a legend.

It's on BBC site... and he works for them, so they should know!

    Shearer to become Newcastle boss

BBC Sport understands that Alan Shearer will be appointed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season.

Magpies legend Shearer, 38, has been continually linked with a return to the club and admitted in September 2008 he would like to be manager.

Chris Hughton is currently in caretaker charge at St James' Park as interim
manager Joe Kinnear recovers from a triple heart bypass.

Shearer rejected an invitation to join Newcastle as a coach last November.

    bbc have confirmed it

No lose for Shearer, if he takes them down it wasn't his fault, if he keeps them up with 2 points from 8 games we'll all be telling our grandchildren.

    Keegan as his number 2?

I don't think this is a win-win situation for Shearer. He is apparently taking the job until the end of the season. He's taking over at an horrendous time - we have few games left, we are two points adrift in the relegation zone, and we have a poor squad of players. If we go down, his reputation will suffer nevertheless; and if we go down and he doesn't take the job up permanently there and then, it will be difficult for him to return to the club in the future. It is a gutsy move on his part. I think there are two possibilities: it's a move borne only out of his own desperation; or else he wants the job longer term and he's been given assurances by the board that he'll be able to manage as he sees fit whether we go down or whether we do not.

I'm happy over the news. It should motivate the players, it will unite the support and generate a positive atmosphere that is focused on the pitch, and I have a huge deal of faith in Shearer as a football man and as a human being. I just wish we'd made the appointment a few months ago. The timing doesn't really sit well with me. I think it gives us a much improved chance of survival, and that is the main thing - but I think it does put a lot on Shearer's shoulders.

The hate - He raped the entire league for over a decade. Yes he had a dirty side, but so did Bergkamp, everyone loves him, Heskey is dirty and people love him too "ooh he's so underrated". I could name more.

The fear - He turned down Man U twice, no one can understand this. How dare he not follow the path that 99% of fuckheads footballers use.

If I'd said 'it does put a lot in the general vicinity of Shearer's shoulders', then that would have been an apt retort, Boro. But wasn't Shearer right to stick his elbows out all those years, given that defenders would climb and jump on him rather than simply near him? Shearer was always more sinned against than sinning.

Pff..I think people probably started jumping on him for fear he'd get more of a swing at their faces otherwise.
