Man U Still Gutted About Shearer Empty Man U Still Gutted About Shearer

Post by Kimbo Fri Jan 26, 2007 2:31 pm

RYAN GIGGS and Gary Neville have hailed Alan Shearer as the one player they wish they could have played alongside at Manchester United.

Shearer twice turned down Alex Ferguson's offer of a move to Old Trafford in the mid-1990s, choosing first Blackburn and then Newcastle.

And Giggs and Neville still cannot believe the former England skipper, who only won one Premiership title with Blackburn in his career, rejected the chance to join United.

"Both Ryan and myself can never understand why any player would ever turn down Manchester United for Blackburn or Newcastle," said Neville.

"Other players we missed out on recently are Ronaldinho and Arjen Robben, but I'd have to say Shearer was the one we wish we'd got.

"I played with him in England games and he definitely had the mentality of a United player. Why he never came to United, I do not know.

"I can't understand that decision and I can't begin to understand what must have been going through someone's mind when they choose Blackburn and Newcastle over United."

Giggs, who has won eight titles, four FA Cups, the European Cup and League Cup during his career at United, would have relished the chance to play with Shearer.

Giggs added: "He was just an unbelievable goal scorer and as a winger, to be supplying the ball to someone like that would have been a dream. He was certainly a world-class player."

I'm surprised lickle Gary can't work it out, he's had aabout years now. Blackburn were a very strong team and Newcastle were a very strong team AND his home town, AND he doesn't like the grumpy Rudolph.

Shearer would have got near enough 40+ a season in that Man Utd side.

Still playing for his boyhood club obvoiusly mean't so much to him so it is entirely understandable.

I wish we had Shearer we could have won countless league titles, Fa cups and maybe a European cup, oh wait we did. I would have dinho over Sherear any day. They were probably asked, "would you have like Shearer to play for United?".

I think Shearer wishes he joined united, more than Giggs & Neville did, thats for sure.

He was awesome in his day, scored some incredible goals

Another manc who doesn't get it.

He turned them down twice. He was happier not winning trophies for Toon than he would have been winning them at Man U.

I don't get what's so hard to understand about it.

He's a Geordie...obviously loves his club...wanted to play for them and be a Geordie hero.

So he came in his peak, and then came back as a swansong... and even then he scored 8 in 17 and kept us in the division.

    1997-98. An absolutely shocking team.

Big fish, small pond very true. The Geordies worshipped him, Shearer would have lived in the shadow of Cantona he would have been just another player at OT.

Depends what your aspirations are, if you want to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, competing against the finest players on the planet. Or do you want to play for a small club in Blackburn or a slightly bigger club in Newcastle. I guess some players cant handle the limelight.

I think he went to newcastle because he thought they could topple united. If Newcastle were in the position they are now, he never would have went there. At the time it appeared like a good decision, but when he was sat at home in May 99 watching Teddy and Ole secure the treble, I bet you he was gutted and regretted it completely.

I guess its why 8 out of 10 girls dont hang around with 9s and 10s, but with 7 and bleows because it makes them feel good hanging around with ugly girls.

And I bet you he wasn't. Of course he would've loved to win the treble with Newcastle, but if winning meant going to Man U, he wasn't interested. Fair play to him ok

If it comes to that, I'm still bitter about you signing Ravanelli. You got relegated that season but beat us on the opening day with Rava scoring a hat-trick. Our start to the season faltered and we ended up 4th on GD. 3 more points and we'd have been 2nd, and within 4 points of United.
