Its really hard to tell when Chelsea have only faced week midfields with their new 442 formation. Chelsea fans have already mentioned that Lampard has been the wrong side on useless (thank you Hansen) in general play but his goal has saved him the criticism he deserves. If Chelsea continue to play Lampard in a 442 I think the team will struggle defensively and offensively.
They will struggle offensively because he cannot play short passing football and therefore messes up many of the attacks. They will struggle defensively because he gives the ball away when his makes yet another bad long ball or when he inevitably gets caught in possession.
One great thing for Lampard is that he has wingers and a striker in Drogba who will fight for every longball so they will still keep many of the bad balls in play for him.

I personally still don't trust Gerrard in CM and he still hasn't impressed me for a while. Though he does seem more comfortable there than before, his partnership with Alonso does not look so solid. If Gerrard plays CM I would always play Mascherano who has more physical qualities than Alonso.

Scholes looks to be continuing his form from last season and looks as composed as ever. His partnership with Hargreaves should work instantly. Carrick looks very weak and should be dropped as soon as Hargreaves is ready.

Cesc is vital to our passing game, however he does seem a bit weaker than last year. It maybe because he was ill towards the end of pre-season and/or because he is playing with Flamini who is just a workhorse and not a particularly solid one at that. Once Gilberto or one of Denilson and Diaby get back he may have more influence.

At first I voted for Cesc because he is entirely necessary to the way we play, however I would now change it to Scholes.

IMO Arteta should be on the list and he would get my vote.

Agooner probably misses defending Henry, so switching over to Lampard, another player who gets a lot of stick on this board, is an act of compensation. Wink

Not entirely accurate, eventually Scholes will retire, as did Cantona, Keane, Becks leaving etc...

The team then has to change its style to accomodate a new player, which i feel is why they have bought Hargreaves, he will allow Carrick to focus on retaining the ball.

I even know you know that's rubbish.

Just Ruud being replaced by Saha and Keane and Scholes out of the team come with a different way of playing.

Instead of a rigid 4-3-3 we returned to an attacking 4-4-2.

Well there can be reasons for it i guess, but how he played last year he was not at that level in the previous 2-3 years i would say.

At the beginning of the season he got that eye injury, he was dreadful, but playing next to Smith is not easy i guess.

The answer to the question is 'whoever's team wins the important trophies this season'. That's how history works - wait for an event to happen, then earmark heroes. For all humanity's attempts to turn this dynamic around, it won't happen.

But probably Lampard. Gets Chelsea out of holes quite often, has a good (but not stunning) record in the big games.

I think they are better suited now than back in 2002 when together they forged that unbeaten partnership where Gerrard would sit and Scholes would venture forward. I think now you could have Scholes as a deep lying play maker, with Gerrard bombing up and down the pitch.

Naturally against better opposition they may come unstuck, but against the vast majority of opponents this would work very well, especially if we use 'proper' wingers to stretch the park through the centre.
